Close seasons

Rules & access · Last reviewed 2026-08-10

Periods during which fishing for some or all species is not permitted — a protection concept whose dates, scope and existence all vary.

A close season is a period during which fishing for particular species, or in particular waters, is prohibited. The reasoning is biological: fish gathering to spawn are concentrated, preoccupied and unusually vulnerable, and removing or disturbing them at that point has a disproportionate effect on recruitment.

That is the concept, and it is sound. Almost everything else about close seasons is variable.

Whether one applies at all differs — many stillwaters have no close season while rivers in the same country do. The dates differ between countries, between water types, and sometimes between individual waters. The species covered differ. Whether the restriction is on fishing, on retention, or on particular methods differs. And they change: close season policy has been actively debated and revised in several jurisdictions in recent decades.

So FishingHQ explains what a close season is for and why it exists, and specifically does not tell you when one runs. That is exactly the kind of information that would be wrong within a year and dangerous to rely on.

What it is

A defined period during which fishing for some or all species is prohibited or restricted, typically aligned with the spawning period of the species being protected. It may apply to fishing altogether, to retention only, or to particular methods, and it may apply to some water types and not others within the same jurisdiction.

Why it exists

Spawning fish aggregate, move into predictable shallow areas, and are far easier to catch and far more vulnerable to disturbance than at other times. Removing or disturbing them then reduces recruitment disproportionately. A secondary purpose in some systems is to give spawning habitat — marginal weed, gravel redds — a period free of trampling and disturbance.

What varies between places

  • Whether a close season applies at all to a given water type.
  • The dates, which differ by country, region, water type and sometimes by individual water.
  • The species covered, which may be all species or specific ones.
  • Whether the restriction prohibits fishing, prohibits retention, or restricts methods.
  • Whether a fishery's own rules impose a closed period beyond any statutory one.
  • Whether the policy is under review, which it periodically is.

Who to ask

  • The national or regional fisheries authority, for any statutory close season and its current dates.
  • The club, fishery or landowner controlling the water, for their own closed periods.
  • The relevant authority for the specific species, where species-specific protections apply.

Check the rules before you fish

Fishing laws, bylaws, access rules, seasons, bait restrictions and permitted methods vary by location and can change. Check the current rules from the relevant authority and the water you intend to fish before fishing.

Check with:

  • Current national or regional law for where you are fishing
  • Current local bylaws
  • The relevant fisheries authority
  • The landowner, club or fishery whose water it is
  • Any restrictions specific to the species or the method you intend to use
