The fishing year: what each season changes

One treatment of the seasonal round rather than four near-identical pages, written from the two things that actually change — temperature and day length — so that it works in either hemisphere.
SEASONS ARE NOT A CALENDAR. Two physical variables drive nearly everything a fish does across a year, and both of them can be observed rather than looked up: WATER TEMPERATURE, which sets metabolic rate and therefore appetite and activity, and DAY LENGTH, which is the reliable cue fish use to time spawning and migration.
Writing the year in terms of those two makes it hemisphere-neutral and makes it usable on a tropical coast where the temperate four-season model simply does not apply.
THE WARMING PERIOD. Water rising through the range where the local species become active. Fish that have been slow feed hard to recover condition and to build reserves for spawning. Many species move shallower as the shallows warm first. This is often the most consistent fishing of the year, and it is short.
SPAWNING. Timed by temperature and photoperiod together, species by species. Fish on the spawning grounds may be aggressive, preoccupied or entirely uninterested in food, and they are also at their most vulnerable — which is why many jurisdictions impose closed seasons and why several fisheries carry voluntary restraint even where they do not. Behaviour immediately before and after spawning differs sharply from behaviour during it.
THE WARM PERIOD. Metabolism is high, so fish need more food and eat more — but warm water holds less oxygen while demanding more of it, so beyond an optimum the fishing deteriorates and the welfare risk of catch and release rises steeply. Fish move deeper or into oxygenated water, feeding compresses into the cooler hours around dawn, dusk and night, and stratification separates the water column.
THE COOLING PERIOD. Frequently the best fishing of the year for predatory species, because fish feed hard while the water is still warm enough to digest efficiently and their prey is at its most abundant after a season's recruitment. Turnover in deep waters mixes the column and redistributes everything.
THE COLD PERIOD. Metabolism drops, feeding windows shorten to the warmest part of the day, and fish move to the most thermally stable water available. They still feed; they simply do so less often, more slowly and in a smaller area. Presentation slows to match.
AND IN THE TROPICS, WHERE TEMPERATURE VARIES LITTLE, the year is organised by RAINFALL instead — wet and dry seasons, the flood pulse in large river systems, and the movement of fish onto and off floodplains. That is a genuinely different annual cycle and it governs a very large part of the world's inland fishing.
Years organised by ice, by wind and by water level rather than by season
The four-season structure above is a temperate maritime one. Across the geography this catalogue now describes, the year is frequently organised by a single dominating variable that is not the season.
BY ICE, ACROSS THE NORDIC AND BALTIC INTERIOR. Months of cover, a very short and very intense open-water season, and a distinct winter fishery through the ice that is ordinary rather than exotic. The two transitions matter more than the seasons either side of them: first ice and last ice are both productive and both are when people go through.
BY WIND, ACROSS THE MEDITERRANEAN. A summer dominated by a persistent northerly that decides whether a day happens at all, and a shoulder season and winter that are frequently better fishing precisely because the wind is more variable and the water less stratified. A Mediterranean year is read from a wind rose more usefully than from a calendar.
BY WATER LEVEL, ACROSS THE SEMI-ARID SOUTH AND THE REGULATED NORTH. In a semi-arid catchment the year is a flood and a drawdown, and the fish concentrate as the water leaves. On a regulated reservoir the level is drawn down and refilled on power and irrigation demand, so the productive margin moves vertically through the year for reasons that have nothing to do with weather.
BY DAYLIGHT, ABOVE THE ARCTIC CIRCLE. A summer with no darkness and a winter with no daylight, which removes the dawn-and-dusk structure entirely for months at a time and replaces it with something else — see the light-edge record.
AND BY MIGRATION, WHEREVER A NARROW PLACE CONCENTRATES A MOVEMENT. The Strait of Gibraltar, the Strait of Messina, the Danish straits and the Baltic river mouths all have years organised around things passing through rather than around things living there, and a fortnight either side of a passage matters more than the month it sits in.
WHAT TRANSFERS. The underlying biology — spawning, feeding, growth and the temperature that paces them — is the same everywhere. What changes is which variable an angler should be watching, and the useful question in an unfamiliar place is not what season it is but what the local year is organised BY.
