Choose a fish, then where you will fish from: what to use and why, how to put the rig together, how to fish it there, and what to check before going — season, conditions, rules and safety — each labelled by the evidence behind it.

Another fish?

These are the 19 fish with a full FishingHQ guide. For any other, the species finder gives the methods, baits, lures and rigs its records link to, and where it is documented caught. It does not give an outfit, because no record does.

How it is built, and what it refuses

  • Every line is from a record. Outfits, approaches, baits and lures come from the fish’s guide, scoped to the venues the guide wrote them for. Rigs are the ones the fish’s own records link to, with the drawing where one exists. Nothing is composed by the tool.
  • Each is labelled. A documented recommendation is written for this fish at this venue with a source on record. A conditional suggestion is written for the fish but uncited, weaker or for another venue. A general principle is what decides that kind of tackle or method for any fish. An evidence gap means nothing is written, and nothing is made up to fill it.
  • A rig’s steps carry their own check. That a source links a rig to a fish is one fact; whether its assembly steps were compared with published sources is another, and the page says which. A rig is offered only for the water and platform its own record files it under, so a boat rig is never suggested for the beach.
  • Choosing how you fish changes the answer. The approaches are the ones the fish’s guide writes for the venue. Pick one and the page shows it, and what that method’s own guide names — the rig it uses, the knots that join it, its tackle and safety pages — labelled as the method’s, never the fish’s. A rig the method names is shown only where the water and platform admit it. There is no experience-level or “what I own” control: no record grades advice by experience or says which reel suits which rod, so neither would change anything true.
  • The month is checked, not forecast. Choose one and the page says whether it falls inside the season windows the guide gives, and which documented places record catches then.
  • It gives no hook sizes and no compatibility. No guide gives a hook size that holds across baits and venues, and none of the sources read sets out which reel balances which rod. Both gaps are said, not guessed.
  • It is not permission and not a forecast. Rules and access belong to the place; the trip planner and the destination pages name who to ask.
  • Nothing is sent. The page is built ahead of time; your choices live in the address, so a setup can be shared. A setup you save is kept in this browser only — see cookies and local storage.
