Day length sets the calendar and temperature sets the date, with flow, tide and lunar cues fine-tuning the timing for particular species.
Spawning is not triggered by one variable but by a sequence, and separating them explains a great deal of otherwise puzzling seasonal behaviour.
Photoperiod — day length — is the reliable annual clock. It does not vary between years, and many species use it to begin the physiological preparation for spawning weeks or months in advance. This is why gonad development in a temperate fish starts long before anything visible happens.
Temperature then determines the actual date. A prepared fish spawns when the water reaches the species' threshold, which is why the same river can see spawning several weeks apart in different years and why a cold spring delays everything.
For some species a third cue completes the sequence: a flow event for river spawners, a spring tide for some coastal species, a lunar phase for some reef fish.
Why this explains closed seasons and behaviour
Closed seasons exist because fish concentrate, become catchable, and are at their most vulnerable when spawning. They are set by the calendar rather than by conditions, which means in a cold year they may protect a period after spawning and in a warm year miss part of it — a known limitation rather than a flaw in the concept.
Behaviour changes conspicuously. Many species stop feeding, or feed very selectively, in the immediate run-up to and during spawning. Others feed heavily beforehand to build condition, which is the origin of the pre-spawn feeding period that anglers value.
Migration is triggered by the same cues. Salmon and sea trout runs respond to flow; shad and smelt runs to temperature and tide; the spring movements of asp, ide and barbel to rising water.

What anglers should take from it
Expect timing to move between years, and read water temperature rather than the calendar when trying to anticipate it.
Expect behaviour to change rather than simply intensify. A pre-spawn feeding period and a spawning period are different fishing propositions, and a post-spawn recovery period is different again.
And treat spawning fish as a decision rather than an opportunity. Fishing to concentrated spawning aggregations is legal in many places and is questioned by many anglers on conservation grounds, particularly for slow-growing species and aggregation spawners where a single site holds much of a population's reproductive capacity.
