Safety
Line under tension — Can cause serious injury or death
Heavy trolling and popping tackle carries very high drag loads. A leader, split ring or knot failing under that load returns a lure with large hooks towards the boat at speed, and a hand caught in running line or against a spool under load is seriously injured.
What reduces it: Keep hands clear of running line and of the leader while a fish is on. Nobody stands in line with a loaded rod or behind a leader being handled. Gloves for leader work. Inspect connections regularly and replace rather than hoping.
Hooks and barbs — Can cause injury needing treatment
Large multi-hook lures at boatside, with a green fish attached and a deck moving, are the classic way people are badly hooked.
What reduces it: Control the fish before anybody touches the leader. Use a de-hooking tool, and single hooks where they are permitted and adequate. Keep the deck clear during the endgame.
Boat safety — Can cause injury needing treatment
Both methods are conducted from a moving vessel, often offshore, with a busy deck and trailing lines. Falls, entanglement in trolling lines and going overboard are the risks.
What reduces it: Lifejackets. A clear deck. Nobody near the transom while lines are being set or retrieved with way on. Agreed procedure for what happens when a fish takes.
Precautions that always apply here
- Wear a buoyancy aid or lifejacket. Cold water incapacitates strong swimmers within a minute, long before swimming ability matters.
- If a hook goes past the barb into a person, cut the line, leave the hook where it is, and get medical help. Pulling it back out does far more damage than pushing it through under proper care.
- Tell somebody where you are going and when you expect to be back.
- Carry a charged phone in a waterproof case, or another means of calling for help.
Popping is surface lure fishing scaled up until it becomes something else. A large, heavy lure is cast at reef edges, drop-offs, passes and current lines, and then worked violently — hard enough to be conspicuous over a long distance in moving water — until a fish comes up and takes it.
THE TWO LURES ARE NOT THE SAME TOOL. A POPPER has a cupped or dished face that scoops and spits water when pulled, producing noise and a large surface disturbance. It is worked with hard, deliberate pulls, and it is what you use when you want to be heard rather than seen. A STICKBAIT has no cup: it is a slender, weighted body worked with rod-tip action so that it slides, darts and swims across and just under the surface. It is quieter, far more lifelike, and often the answer when a popper has raised fish that will not commit.
The take is the point. It is visible, immediate and extremely violent, and it happens at a distance where the angler is watching rather than feeling.
What is less often said is how hard the fishing itself is. Popping is a long series of maximum-effort casts with very heavy tackle, followed by aggressive retrieves, repeated for hours. Most people who try it discover that the limiting factor is their own shoulders rather than the fish, and that a day of it is a genuine physical undertaking.
What it is
Casting large surface lures — poppers, which push and spit water through a cupped face, or stickbaits, which slide and dart without one — at reef structure and current features, and retrieving them with an action aggressive enough to draw a predatory fish up from depth to attack at the surface.
How it works
Everything is in the retrieve. A popper is worked with hard, downward sweeps of the rod that drive the cupped face through the surface so it scoops and spits water, with the reel taking up slack between sweeps — the noise and the disturbance are the attractant, and they carry a long way in moving water. A stickbait is worked with shorter rod-tip movements co-ordinated with the wind, so that the lure slides, dives and darts rather than splashing; it relies on looking alive rather than on being loud. In both cases the angler is doing all the work, the lure has no built-in action to fall back on, and a retrieve made half-heartedly produces nothing at all.
What it is for
To locate and catch fast, mobile, open-water predators that no static method will reach, by covering a large volume of water either continuously or in a series of long casts.
Setting it up
- The tackle must be balanced end to end, because every component is loaded near its limit continuously — the outfit fails at whatever is weakest, not at whatever is smallest.
- Match lure size to the bait actually present rather than to the fish hoped for. Bait size is the reliable adjustment; lure colour is mostly not.
- Work a popper when you need to be heard across distance or in broken water; switch to a stickbait when fish are showing but refusing.
- Check knots, split rings, hooks and the leader constantly. This is where popping tackle fails, and it fails at the worst moment.
- A drag set correctly before the take is worth more than any adjustment made during the run.
Advantages
- Covers far more water than any static method, and can be worked from a boat or from shore over reef.
- Entirely visual: the fish is seen to take, which is as engaging as fishing gets.
- Highly selective in practice — small fish cannot take a lure of this size, so the method largely selects itself.
- Reaches predators holding over structure that bottom methods cannot be fished on without losing tackle continuously.
Limitations
- Extremely physically demanding, and genuinely not sustainable for a full day by most people.
- Tackle is expensive, heavy and specialised, and it does not do anything else well.
- Blank sessions are normal — this is a method that produces few encounters and remembers each one.
- Failure under load is dangerous rather than merely disappointing, because of the loads and the hooks involved.
Conditions
Popping needs water shallow enough, or fish willing enough, for a predator to come up: reef edges, drop-offs, passes, pinnacles and current lines are the productive settings, and featureless deep water generally is not. Moving water helps, because current concentrates bait against structure and gives fish a reason to be at a fixed point. Bird activity, showing bait and visible current edges are the signs worth moving for. Rough surface conditions can actually help a popper, which is noisy enough to be found in broken water where a subtler lure is lost.
Common mistakes
- Working the lure too gently. The entire premise is conspicuousness, and a timid retrieve is not a quieter version of the method — it is not the method.
- Unbalanced tackle, so the weakest component fails under load and takes the fish with it.
- Stopping the retrieve when a fish appears behind the lure, which is the reliable way to turn a following fish away.
- Not checking split rings and hooks, which take enormous punishment.
- Working a popper too gently. The whole point of the lure is that it is conspicuous.
