A large, powerful, shark-like pelagic fish that shadows rays, buoys and structure, and is commonly hunted by sight from the bow of a boat.
Safety
Injury while handling fish — Can cause injury needing treatment
Cobia frequently appear beaten and then thrash extremely hard once in a boat, causing injuries to anglers and damage to equipment.
What reduces it: Ensure the fish is genuinely exhausted before landing, use a large net or gaff appropriately, and control it immediately on deck. Keep bystanders clear.
Venomous and spined species — Minor injury
The isolated spines along the back are short, hard and sharp, and cause puncture wounds when the fish is gripped or thrashes. They are not venomous; the injury is a clean deep puncture rather than an envenomation.
What reduces it: Handle across the body avoiding the dorsal ridge, and wear gloves when controlling a large fish.
Cobia looks like a remora that kept growing, and the resemblance is not accidental — it is the sole member of its family and its closest relatives are the sharksuckers. Long, dark-backed, flat-headed and heavily built, it behaves like one too: cobia follow large rays, sharks and turtles, and hang around buoys, wrecks and any floating structure.
That behaviour is the basis of the fishery. Cobia are commonly fished for by sight — a boat runs the coast looking for rays or structure with fish shadowing them, and casts a bait or lure to a visible individual. Few large marine gamefish are hunted so visually.
They grow quickly, fight extremely hard, and are among the best eating fish of the warm Atlantic and Indo-Pacific.

Lifecycle and reproduction
Fast-growing, reaching a large size in a few years, with females growing larger and living longer than males. That growth rate makes cobia more resilient than most fish of comparable size, though local aggregations are easily depleted.
Spawns in warm months in coastal and offshore waters, broadcasting eggs in batches through an extended season. Spawning aggregations form seasonally and are the basis of the predictable runs anglers follow.
Feeding and senses
Takes crabs, squid and fish, with crustaceans forming a large part of the diet — the old name 'crab-eater' is accurate. Feeds opportunistically around the animals and structure it shadows.
Hunts by sight in the upper water column, investigating movement and structure. Its habit of approaching boats and visible objects is what makes sight-fishing viable.
Through the year
Makes pronounced seasonal migrations along coastlines with warming water, producing well-known spring and early-summer runs that concentrate both fish and fishing effort.

Why anglers care
A major warm-water sport fish across the Atlantic, Gulf and Indo-Pacific, taken by sight-casting eels, jigs and large soft plastics to fish shadowing rays and structure, and by trolling and bottom fishing near wrecks. Its significance is the combination of size, fighting quality and eating quality in a fish that can be hunted visually from a small boat. A hooked cobia frequently runs straight at the boat and then dives under it.
Handling and returning
A very powerful fish that goes berserk when brought aboard and has injured anglers and damaged boats — practitioner consensus is emphatic that a green cobia should not be lifted into a boat. Subdue the fish properly first, support large fish horizontally with both hands, and keep clear of the stiff dorsal spines.
Never bring a green cobia into the boat
Cobia handling has one rule that experienced crews state before anything else, and it exists because ignoring it has wrecked a lot of boats and injured a lot of people.
WHAT HAPPENS. A cobia brought aboard before it is fully subdued goes berserk. It is a heavy, muscular, powerful fish and it will destroy rod holders, tackle, electronics and shins in a confined cockpit, with hooks attached. This is well known in the fishery and it still happens constantly, because a cobia frequently comes to the boat looking docile and then is not.
SO: SUBDUE IT FIRST OR DO NOT BRING IT ABOARD. Fish being kept are gaffed and dispatched immediately, or put straight into a closed box. Fish being released are released alongside.
THE FISH'S OWN ARMAMENT IS MODEST — a row of short stout dorsal spines that are sharp, no cutting teeth, a rough abrasive mouth, hard gill covers. Lipping is possible on a subdued fish with the body supported. None of that is why this species is on the list.
THE SHARK RESEMBLANCE IS WORTH KNOWING because cobia are frequently seen following rays and sharks and are sight-fished on that basis, and because they are frequently mistaken for small sharks by people who then handle them accordingly.
AND THE RELEASE. Cobia are reasonably robust but are caught in warm water and fight hard. Keep the fish in the water, support it horizontally if lifted, and revive it properly.

A pelagic fish that follows large objects, including animals
Cobia occupy an unusual position between open ocean and inshore structure, and their defining habitat behaviour is one that very few fish share: they associate with large moving things.
THE GENERAL HABITAT IS WARM COASTAL AND OFFSHORE WATER. Cobia are found in tropical and warm temperate seas worldwide except the eastern Pacific, using continental shelf waters, nearshore reefs, wrecks, buoys, bays and inlets, and they move seasonally with temperature — inshore and poleward as water warms, offshore and equatorward as it cools.
THE DEFINING BEHAVIOUR IS ASSOCIATION WITH LARGE OBJECTS, ANIMATE OR NOT. Cobia habitually accompany rays, sharks, turtles and large teleosts, and they do the same with buoys, wrecks, weed lines, anchored boats and any substantial floating structure. The association appears to be a feeding strategy — a large animal moving over the bottom disturbs prey, and a follower takes what is flushed — and it is consistent enough that sight-fishing for cobia is conducted by looking for rays and sharks rather than by looking for cobia.
WHICH MAKES THE HABITAT PARTLY BIOLOGICAL. A ray cruising a shallow flat is, functionally, cobia habitat: a mobile feature that concentrates opportunity. That is a genuinely different relationship from a fish holding on a reef, and it explains why cobia turn up in places that offer no structure at all.
THEY ALSO USE FIXED STRUCTURE HEAVILY where it exists — wrecks, artificial reefs, platforms, navigation markers — for the ordinary reason that structure concentrates prey. The catalogue joins them to both open ocean and inshore ground, and both are correct: this is a fish that moves between the two rather than choosing one.
CURIOSITY IS PART OF THE HABITAT PICTURE, oddly enough. Cobia are notably inquisitive and will approach and investigate a boat, which is behaviourally consistent with a species that makes a living investigating large objects, and it is why they are so often caught by casting to a fish that came to look.
THE THERMAL LIMIT IS REAL. Cobia are warm-water fish and their seasonal presence at the poleward edges of the range is a temperature window rather than a date, which shifts between years.
