This fishing takes place in heavy surf and around river mouths where currents are strong, footing is unstable and, in parts of the range, large predators are present.

What reduces it: Fish with others, do not wade beyond secure footing, and take local advice on conditions and on wildlife before entering the water.

Giant African threadfin — captain fish, or capitaine in francophone West Africa — is the great surf and estuary gamefish of the Atlantic African coast, and the reason a significant destination fishery exists in Gabon and its neighbours.

Like the smaller threadfins of the Indo-Pacific it hunts with free filaments trailing from the pectoral fins, feeling for prey in turbid water where sight is useless. Unlike them it grows very large, and it takes surface lures and large soft plastics with real violence in the surf and around river mouths.

It is heavily fished commercially across the region and is of conservation concern in parts of its range, which is why the sport fishery is largely release-based.

Lifecycle and reproduction

Fast-growing and reaching a large size, and protandrous — maturing first as male and changing to female with size, so large fish are female. Heavy commercial pressure on the large size classes therefore removes the breeding females first.

Spawns in coastal and estuarine waters, with juveniles using lagoons and estuaries as nursery habitat. Sex change with size means the population structure is directly sensitive to size-selective fishing.

Feeding and senses

Takes prawns, crabs and fish located by the pectoral filaments in turbid surf, lagoon and river-mouth water, feeding on and near the bottom as well as in the water column.

Locates prey by touch through the free pectoral filaments rather than by sight, which is what makes it so effective in the heavily sediment-laden water of West African river mouths.

Through the year

Concentrates around river mouths and surf beaches seasonally with runoff and baitfish movement, with the best fishing generally in the drier months when access is practical.

Its significance is as the anchor species of a destination fishery that supports local guiding and, in some areas, funds park and coastal protection. Handling and returning

A large, powerful fish landed in surf. Support the body horizontally, keep it out of dry sand, minimise air exposure, and return it through the wash rather than dropping it. Release is the norm in the sport fishery given commercial pressure on the stock.

How giant African threadfin are fished, and why

A surf and estuary predator with sensory barbels that trail below the body, feeding on crustaceans and small fish in turbid, moving water — and the methods follow the sensory picture rather than a visual one.

SURFCASTING is the primary shore approach because the fish patrols the surf zone and the water is usually coloured, so a scented bait presented on the bottom reaches a fish hunting largely by touch and smell.

SPINNING and POPPING work where the water clears and the fish is feeding actively on baitfish near the surface, which happens on the calmer days and in estuary mouths.

WHAT THE BARBELS EXPLAIN. A fish equipped to find food by contact in murky water is a fish that does not need to see a bait, which is why bait fishing outperforms lures in exactly the conditions — coloured, surf-stirred water — that make lure fishing hardest.

Landed in surf, on a beach, where the sand is the injury

The giant African threadfin of the West African surf is handled under conditions where the fish's own anatomy is almost irrelevant and the beach does all the damage.

THE FISH PRESENTS LITTLE. A large polynemid has a subterminal mouth built for feeding on crustaceans and small fish over sand, no dentition worth avoiding, and no locking spines. It is heavy and powerful and that is the whole of it.

THE SAND IS THE HAZARD, TO THE FISH. A fish's mucus layer is its principal barrier against bacterial and fungal infection, and dry sand strips it comprehensively — far more thoroughly than a dry hand does, because it abrades a whole flank at once and adheres to what is left. A large threadfin dragged up a beach on its side, photographed on dry sand and then walked back to the water has lost that barrier over most of its surface, and the infection that follows is invisible on the day and frequently fatal within weeks.

SO THE FISH DOES NOT LEAVE THE WASH. It is brought into the shallow moving water at the edge of the surf, held there, unhooked there with a tool, and released there. If it is lifted at all it is lifted horizontally with both arms underneath, wet, briefly, and returned to water rather than to sand. AND THIS IS ALMOST ENTIRELY A RELEASE FISHERY for a good reason: the species is under heavy commercial and artisanal pressure across its West African range, and the recreational sector's contribution is small enough that its handling standards are the whole of its impact.

THE ANGLER'S OWN SAFETY IS THE OTHER HALF and it is not minor. This is heavy surf and river-mouth water with strong currents, unstable footing and, in parts of the range, large predators. Fishing with others, not wading beyond secure footing, and taking local advice on both conditions and wildlife are not precautions bolted on to the fishing; they are the conditions under which it is reasonable at all.
