Blue threadfin

A tropical estuary fish that hunts with four free filaments extending from the pectoral fin, feeling for prawns in water too turbid to see through.

Blue threadfin is built for mud. It lives in the turbid tropical estuaries and coastal waters of northern Australia and the Indo-Pacific, where visibility is often measured in centimetres, and it hunts with a set of tools that do not depend on seeing anything.

Four long free filaments extend forward from the lower part of each pectoral fin, and the fish trails them ahead and below itself as it moves, feeling for prawns and small fish in the sediment. It is a genuinely unusual adaptation and the single most distinctive thing about the species.

The mouth is inferior and the snout overhangs it, both consistent with a fish that feeds on and just above the bottom. It is excellent eating and a major target across northern Australia.

Lifecycle and reproduction

Fast-growing and protandrous — individuals mature first as male and change to female as they grow, so the largest fish in a population are female. Size-selective fishing therefore removes the females first, which is the key management consideration.

Spawns in coastal and estuarine waters in the warmer months. Sex change from male to female with size means the population's reproductive structure is directly altered by fishing the larger size classes.

Feeding and senses

Takes prawns, small fish and crustaceans located by the pectoral filaments in turbid water, feeding on and just above soft bottom.

Locates prey by touch through the free pectoral filaments rather than by sight, which is why the species thrives in water where visual predators cannot hunt.

Through the year

Most available in warm months and around wet-season runoff, when turbid productive water suits its feeding method. Tidal movement governs daily activity.

Distribution

Indo-Pacific: Persian/Arabian Gulf, Pakistan, India and Sri Lanka (except the Red Sea and East Africa) to northern Australia and New Guinea. Replaced by Eleutheronema rhadinum (Jordan & Evermann, 1902), in East Asia (Japan, China, Viet Nam)

Why anglers care

A major northern Australian estuary and inshore target, taken on soft plastics, vibes and prawn baits worked slowly near the bottom in turbid water, and highly regarded as food. Its significance is that it provides quality fishing in conditions — heavy sediment, poor visibility — that defeat sight-based approaches. Practitioner consensus favours slow presentations close to the bottom, consistent with how the fish actually feeds.

Handling and returning

A soft-mouthed fish that tears easily and has delicate scales. Support the body, avoid lipping, use wet hands, and return promptly in warm water. The pectoral filaments are fragile and should not be gripped.

THE FILAMENTS ARE FEELERS. The free pectoral rays that give the family its name are sensory, trailed along and above the bottom to detect prawns, small fish and invertebrates in water where sight is useless. Turbidity is therefore habitat rather than a handicap, and the fish are most abundant exactly where visibility is worst.

SOFT BOTTOM IS THE REQUIREMENT — mud and sand in estuaries, river mouths, coastal beaches and the shallow inshore zone. They are not a reef or structure fish.

THEY ARE STRONGLY ESTUARINE and move between fresh, brackish and coastal water freely, with distribution shifting with salinity and with freshwater flow.

DEPTH IS SHALLOW — mostly a few metres — and they work the surf zone, the drains and the edges of flats where the tide moves food.

FRESHWATER FLOW IS A HABITAT DRIVER IN ITS OWN RIGHT. Wet-season flow changes salinity distribution and moves the fish, and catches in several regional fisheries correlate with river discharge.

AND THE SPECIES IS PROTANDROUS, changing from male to female with size as barramundi do, so the size structure of a population is also its sex structure — which matters when reading any size-based rule for this fish.
