Gear ratio and retrieve rate

Gear ratio counts spool turns per handle turn, but what you actually feel is line recovered per turn — and that depends on how much line is on the spool, which is why the ratio alone tells you less than it looks.
A gear ratio written as 6.2:1 means the spool or rotor turns 6.2 times for every full turn of the handle. It is a statement about the gearbox and nothing else.
The figure that matters at the rod is LINE RECOVERED PER HANDLE TURN, and the two are not the same because the amount of line picked up per spool revolution depends on the circumference of what the line is wrapped around. A full spool has a larger effective diameter than a half-empty one, so the same reel at the same ratio recovers noticeably less line per turn at the end of a long run than at the start. Manufacturers increasingly publish line-per-turn figures for exactly this reason, and where both are given the second is the more useful.
Gearing is also a trade. A higher ratio moves more line per turn and gives less mechanical advantage; a lower ratio winds more slowly and cranks harder. There is no free speed. A reel that recovers a great deal of line per turn will feel heavy under load, which is why deep jigging and heavy bottom work often use lower ratios and fast surface work uses higher ones.
A third variable sits underneath both: handle length. A longer handle arm increases leverage at the cost of the sweep required to turn it, which is why the same reel with a longer handle feels lower-geared without any change to the gearbox.
What a ratio is chosen for, method by method
Fast ratios earn their place where slack has to be recovered quickly rather than where a lure has to travel fast. Working a surface lure, fishing a slack-line jerkbait, or picking up line after a long drift all involve taking up metres of line that are doing nothing, and a fast reel does that with fewer turns and less time lost.
Slow ratios earn their place where the retrieve is a sustained load. A deep jig, a large diving crankbait, or a fish being lifted through open water are all continuous work, and the mechanical advantage of a lower gear is the difference between a comfortable retrieve and a painful one.
Mid ratios exist because most fishing is not at either extreme, and because retrieve speed is more reliably controlled by the hand than by the gearbox. This is the point most often missed: an angler can turn a fast reel slowly, but cannot turn a slow reel fast enough to recover slack instantly, so speed is a capability and slowness is a technique.
None of that makes a ratio correct in the abstract. It makes it correct for a load and a purpose.

The arithmetic is not in dispute. Spool turns per handle turn is a fixed property, line recovered per turn falls as the spool empties, and gearing trades speed against torque. All of that can be measured with a ruler and a spool of line.
What is contested is whether retrieve speed itself changes catch rates, and for which species. Anglers hold strong and divergent views, often reasoning backwards from a good day.
