How a fishing reel works

A reel stores line, releases it under control when a fish pulls, and recovers it. The three common layouts solve those problems in mechanically different ways, and the difference decides what each can cast and how each fails.
A reel is a line store with a clutch. Everything else about it follows from how it gets line off the spool and back on.
A FIXED-SPOOL REEL — a spinning reel — keeps the spool stationary and pointing down the rod. On the cast, line peels off the front lip in coils; nothing rotates, so there is almost no inertia to overcome and very light weights can be cast. On the retrieve, a rotor with a line roller on it spins around the stationary spool and lays line back on. That rotor is also the source of the layout's characteristic problem: every turn of the handle puts a twist into the line, which accumulates.
A MULTIPLIER — a baitcaster or conventional reel — has the spool in line with the rod, and the spool itself rotates on the cast. That means the weight has to accelerate the spool, so very light lures cannot be cast at all; it also means the spool keeps rotating after the lure slows, which is the overrun that produces a tangle. In exchange the line comes off straight, the layout is far stronger under load, and cranking against a heavy fish is mechanically more direct.
A FLY REEL, in most fishing, is a line store and a drag and very little else. The cast is made by the weight of the line rather than of the terminal tackle, so the reel plays no part in it. On a fish that runs, the reel becomes the whole game.
THREE MECHANISMS DO THE ACTUAL WORK, whatever the layout. THE DRAG is a stack of friction washers that lets line leave the spool at a set resistance rather than snapping. THE ANTI-REVERSE stops the handle turning backwards, which is what allows the drag to work rather than the handle spinning in your knuckles. THE OSCILLATION SYSTEM moves the spool in and out as the rotor turns, so line lies in even layers rather than building a ridge in one place — an uneven lay is what causes braid to bury itself in the spool and lock up on the next cast.
GEAR RATIO IS NOT SPEED, IT IS A TRADE. A high ratio recovers more line per handle turn and gives less mechanical advantage; a low ratio winds slowly and pulls hard. This matters more than most beginners expect, because the wrong ratio makes some techniques physically tiring rather than merely slow.
WHAT WEARS OUT AND WHY IT MATTERS: the drag washers, the line roller and the bail spring. All three fail quietly, and all three fail at the moment they are needed.
What salt does to a reel, and what to do about it
A reel used in the sea and then put away is a reel with a limited life, and the damage is not visible until it is done. Salt water carries into the body along the line, past the rotor and through the handle, and the corrosion starts on the internal steel — bearings and shafts — where nobody looks.
The practice that works is unglamorous and takes two minutes. Back the drag off fully so no water is drawn past the washers, rinse the outside with a gentle spray of fresh water rather than a jet, which drives salt inwards, wipe it, let it dry properly, and reset the drag before the next session. Submerging a reel to rinse it is worse than not rinsing it.
A reel that has been dunked is a different problem and should be dealt with immediately rather than at the end of the trip. A sealed reel is not a waterproof reel; sealing slows ingress and does not prevent it.

What a reel that is set up wrong actually does
Most reel problems are filling problems, and they announce themselves in ways that look like line faults or casting faults instead.
OVERFILLED IS THE COMMONEST FAULT AND THE MOST MISREAD. A fixed-spool reel filled to the lip sheds line in loops the moment tension comes off, and those loops come off in a bunch on the next cast and jam. The symptom is line spilling off the spool while the rod is on a rest, or a cast that stops dead a few metres out with a tangle at the ring. The cure is to take line off until it sits a couple of millimetres below the lip, and that is a small enough margin that most people do not believe it matters.
UNDERFILLED IS RARER AND COSTS DISTANCE, because line has to lift further over the lip on every coil.
LINE TWIST IS A FIXED-SPOOL FACT RATHER THAN A FAULT. Every turn of the handle puts a twist into the line as it comes round the bail, and retrieving against a locked drag, or reeling while a fish takes line, multiplies it enormously. The symptom is line that corkscrews off the spool and forms loops in mid-air. Never reel against a slipping drag: pump the rod and recover on the drop.
A CLICKING BAIL ARM ON THE CAST is the arm closing early under its own weight, which drops the lead. On a multiplier, the equivalent is a spool that spins faster than line is leaving it — the overrun, and the reason braking systems exist.
AND SALT IS THE THING THAT KILLS THEM. A reel used in the sea and not rinsed in cool fresh water will be rough within a season and seized within two. That is maintenance rather than technique, and it is the single cheapest thing a beginner can do to make equipment last.
