Why braid digs into the spool

Braid has no stretch and a small bearing area, so line wound on slackly is pulled down between the turns beneath it under load — a purely mechanical problem with a purely mechanical fix.

Monofilament stretches as it is wound and relaxes onto the spool as a slightly springy mass that resists being pulled into itself. Braid does neither. It is dimensionally stable, thin for its strength, and it presents a small contact area to the turns below it.

So when braid is wound onto a spool under low tension and then loaded — by a fish, by a snag, by a heavy lure at distance — the loaded turns cut down through the slack turns beneath them until they reach something solid. On the next cast, line runs out until it reaches the buried section and stops dead. At best that is a lost cast. At the wrong moment it is a crack-off with a lure attached.

The cause is entirely about the tension at which the line was laid down, and it has three common sources: retrieving a lure that offers little resistance, winding in loose line after a cast rather than under tension, and spooling the reel in the first place without tension on the incoming line.

The fixes, in order of how much they change

Spool under tension. When loading a reel, run the line through a damp cloth or between gloved fingers so it goes on firmly. This alone prevents most of the problem, because the foundation layers are the ones the loaded turns bury into.

Recover under tension during fishing. After a long cast into wind, or when winding in a light lure, the line comes back slack. Pinching it against the rod blank with a finger as it winds costs nothing and lays it down firmly.

Use a monofilament backing. A layer of mono beneath the braid gives the braid a compressible bed rather than a hard spool arbor, and also stops braid slipping around a smooth spool as a unit.

Fill the spool correctly. An overfilled spool sheds loops; an underfilled one casts poorly and puts the working turns closer to the arbor.

Why this is not the same problem as wind knots

Both are braid faults and they have different causes, which matters because the remedies differ.

Dig-in is a tension problem in the wound line and is fixed by winding more firmly.

A wind knot is a loop of slack line leaving the spool ahead of the line behind it and passing through itself, usually on the cast, and it is caused by slack at the moment of release, by line twist, or by a bail arm closing on a loose coil. Winding more firmly helps a little; removing twist and managing the bail helps considerably more.

Anglers who treat the two as one thing tend to fix half the problem and conclude that braid is temperamental.
