Monofilament line

A single extruded nylon strand with useful stretch, moderate visibility and a limited life — still the default line for most bait fishing.
Monofilament is a single strand of extruded nylon. Its defining property is stretch: typically twenty to thirty per cent before breaking, which acts as a shock absorber throughout the system. That stretch cushions a lunging fish, forgives a heavy strike, and protects a light hook-hold — which is exactly why it remains the standard for float fishing, ledgering and most bait work.
The same stretch is a liability where sensitivity matters. At forty metres, a monofilament line absorbs a delicate take before the rod tip ever registers it, which is why lure anglers moved to braid.
Monofilament's other significant property is that it degrades. Ultraviolet light and repeated wetting break down nylon over months, and a spool left on a reel through a season loses a substantial fraction of its strength invisibly. Line that fails at a knot it should have held is usually old line rather than bad line.

What it does
Connects the angler to the terminal tackle, carries the load of casting and of playing a fish, and — through its stretch — absorbs shock loads that would otherwise reach the hook-hold. It also carries the terminal tackle's weight during the cast and determines, through its diameter, how much drag the water and the wind exert on the system.
How to choose one
- Choose by breaking strain first and diameter second — but be aware the two are related, and a line that achieves a high strain at a low diameter is doing so with better material rather than by magic.
- Heavier line is more visible, casts less far and is more affected by current; use the lightest that will genuinely land the fish.
- For abrasive ground, diameter and abrasion resistance matter more than breaking strain.
- Replace it on a schedule rather than when it fails.
- Match line to reel capacity — an overfilled spool tangles and an underfilled one casts short.
What the numbers mean
BREAKING STRAIN, in pounds or kilograms, is the load at which the line parts under a straight steady pull. Real-world strength is always lower, because a knot reduces it — typically by ten to thirty per cent depending on the knot — and because a shock load is not a steady pull. DIAMETER, in millimetres, determines casting distance, visibility, water resistance and how much line fits on a spool; it is the more comparable figure between brands, since breaking strain testing is not universally standardised outside formal line-class standards. Note that a manufacturer's stated breaking strain is the manufacturer's own figure. Independent line-class testing standards exist and are used for record claims, and the two are not always the same number.
Care, and how it fails
Nylon degrades under ultraviolet light and with repeated wetting and drying. Store spools in the dark and away from heat. Check the last few metres before every session by running them through your fingers — nicks, roughness and flat spots all mean the end should be cut off. Replace main line at least annually with normal use, and more often with heavy use or sea use. The commonest failure is not the line breaking mid-length; it is a knot pulling because it was tied dry or in damaged line.
What a stated breaking strain does and does not tell you
A breaking strain printed on a spool is a claim made by the company selling it, and it is worth treating as exactly that. It is generally in the right area, because a line that broke far below its stated figure would be immediately obvious. But there is no universal requirement that it be measured a particular way, and different manufacturers test differently — dry or wet, straight pull or over a knot, at different rates of loading.
The one place a standardised measurement genuinely exists is line-class testing for record claims, where the class is defined by tested breaking strain and lines sold as class-rated are tested to break at or below the stated figure. That is a different thing from a general-purpose spool marked with a number.
The practical consequence is that comparing two brands by their stated breaking strain is unreliable, and comparing them by DIAMETER is much less so — a millimetre is a millimetre. If you want to know how strong your line actually is, the only honest answer is to test the knot you actually tie, in the line you actually use, with a spring balance.
