Line twist, and where it comes from

Twist is put into line by something rotating, and almost nothing removes it — so the answer is nearly always to find the rotating thing rather than to treat the symptom.
Line twist announces itself as loops springing off the spool, tangles that form on their own, and casts that fall short for no visible reason. It accumulates rather than appearing suddenly.
WHERE IT COMES FROM.
A SPINNING LURE OR BAIT WITH NO SWIVEL. The commonest cause by far. Anything that rotates on the retrieve puts one twist into the line per revolution, and over a session that is thousands.
A FIXED-SPOOL REEL RETRIEVED UNDER NO LOAD. The bail wraps line around the spool whether or not the line is coming in, so reeling against a slack line or against a drag that is slipping adds twist directly.
A POORLY FILLED SPOOL, where line was loaded with a twist already in it.
A LEAD OR RIG SPINNING ON THE RETRIEVE, which is common with certain lead shapes and with rigs whose baits are mounted asymmetrically.
AND TIDE ROLLING A RIG along the bottom for an hour, which is the sea-specific cause people rarely consider.
Finding the cause, and clearing what is already there
WORK OUT WHERE IT IS. Twist near the terminal end only points at the lure, bait or rig rotating. Twist throughout the spool points at the reel or the loading.
THE TESTS. Retrieve a lure beside you and watch it — if it rolls or spins, that is the source. Wind in against a slipping drag and see whether the line piles oddly. Drop a length of line and see whether it kinks on itself.
WHAT TO CHANGE. Fit a decent swivel above anything that rotates, close to it rather than a metre away. Stop reeling when the drag is giving line — pump the rod and recover on the down stroke instead. Load line under tension and from a spool oriented correctly. And change a lead shape or bait mounting that spins.
HOW TO CLEAR EXISTING TWIST. Trail a long length of line behind a boat or in a current with nothing on the end, and it will untwist itself. From the shore, removing the terminal tackle and letting line run out in a strong tide does the same. Nothing else reliably works — and stripping and reloading is often quicker than fighting it.
WHAT NOT TO ASSUME. That a swivel of any kind is enough; a cheap swivel under load does not turn. Or that twist is cosmetic — it costs distance, causes tangles and reduces strength.
