Margins, features, and why fish use edges

Fish concentrate at boundaries — between deep and shallow, weed and open water, current and slack, light and shade — and the reason is that an edge supplies food and cover at the same place.
AN EDGE IS WHERE TWO ENVIRONMENTS MEET, and edges are where fish are. This is one of the few generalisations in fishing that holds across species, waters and continents, and it has a mechanism behind it rather than being a rule of thumb.
WHY EDGES CONCENTRATE LIFE. Two habitats meeting produces a third condition available in neither, and the boundary supports species from both sides plus those that specialise in the transition. More importantly for fishing, an edge lets a fish satisfy two conflicting requirements at once: FOOD, which is usually in the open or the shallow, and COVER, which is usually in the deep or the structured. A fish that can sit at the boundary can feed with an escape route, and that is worth more to it than either resource alone.
THE EDGES THAT MATTER, all of which are findable.
DEPTH CHANGES. Any drop-off, shelf, gravel bar or channel edge. Fish patrol along them because they can move between depths in a body length.
WEED EDGES. The line between weed and clear water is the single most reliable feature in most stillwaters. Prey lives in the weed; predators wait at its edge; and the transition is visible from the bank.
CURRENT SEAMS. Fast water beside slow water in any river or tidal flow, for the food-to-effort reason.
LIGHT AND SHADE. Overhanging trees, bridges, moored boats, and any structure casting shade. Shade gives visual cover to the fish in it and lets it see out into brighter water, which is a hunting advantage.
HARD EDGES. Walls, piers, reed beds, fallen timber, lily beds.
THE MARGIN IS THE MOST UNDERFISHED EDGE THERE IS, and this is the practical point most worth making. The bank itself is a depth change, a shade line and frequently a food source all at once, and in many waters the biggest fish feed within a rod's length of the bank — particularly at dawn, at dusk and at night, when they will use shallow water they avoid in daylight. Almost every angler walks past that water, sets up, and casts over it. Arriving quietly and fishing the margin first, before disturbing it, is free.
AND THE CAUTION: an edge that is obvious to you is obvious to everybody, and a heavily fished feature can hold wary fish. On pressured water the productive edge is frequently the subtle one nobody has noticed.
Edges that are not banks: seagrass, groynes and skerries
The principle above — fish use the boundary between two kinds of water or two kinds of ground — is general. What counts as an edge is not, and three of the most important edges in European fishing are not the kind of margin this record describes.
THE EDGE OF A SEAGRASS MEADOW is the defining feature of Mediterranean inshore ground. Posidonia grows in dense meadows on the sand between rock outcrops, and it is the nursery, the shelter and the food base of the whole shallow system. The boundary where a meadow meets clean sand, or meets rock, holds a concentration of life that neither habitat has on its own, and it is visible from the surface in clear water — which makes it one of the easiest edges in Europe to read and one a northern angler does not know to look for. It is also protected, which makes anchoring on it a separate matter entirely.
A GROYNE FIELD IS A MANUFACTURED EDGE REPEATED HUNDREDS OF TIMES. On the big engineered rivers, each structure produces the same arrangement — fast water off the tip, a hard seam along its flank, slack and recirculation in the bay behind, a scour hole at the junction. That is the crease-and-slack pattern of a natural river, mass-produced and reliable, and it is why those rivers are more readable rather than less.
AND A SKERRY IS AN EDGE IN THREE DIMENSIONS. In the Baltic and Nordic archipelagos, ice-scoured granite produces abrupt drop-offs immediately beside very shallow ground, so the boundary between two depths is vertical and only a few metres across. A shallow bay warming in spring, with a five-metre drop at its mouth, is a temperature edge and a depth edge and a shelter edge stacked on one another — which is why archipelago pike fishing concentrates on such a small proportion of a very large amount of water.
THE TRANSFERABLE INSTRUCTION. In an unfamiliar water, do not look for a bank. Look for where two things meet, whatever the two things are.
