Fenland drains and lowland waterways

Straight, engineered, shallow waterways built to move water off farmland rather than to hold fish — which makes them a fishery with no natural features and a completely different reading problem.
A DRAIN IS A PIECE OF INFRASTRUCTURE. Across the lowland fens of eastern England, and across comparable reclaimed landscapes in the Netherlands, northern Germany and elsewhere, land below or near sea level is kept dry by an engineered network of straight channels, sluices and pumping stations. Fish live in them, and a substantial angling culture has grown up around them, but the water was not built for either.
WHAT MAKES THEM DIFFERENT TO FISH.
THEY HAVE ALMOST NO NATURAL FEATURES. Straight, uniform width, uniform depth, engineered banks. The features that hold fish in a river — pools, riffles, seams, undercuts — are largely absent, so the fish distribute themselves against much subtler cues: a slight depth change, a bridge, a bend, a reed margin, a lock or sluice, a change in weed growth. Finding fish here is a search problem rather than a reading problem, and the standard approach reflects that: cover ground, fish a swim briefly, move.
THE FLOW IS ARTIFICIAL AND INTERMITTENT. Water moves when pumps run and sluices open, which is driven by rainfall and land management rather than by anything natural. A drain can be still for days and then running hard, and the fish respond to that pulse. Anglers who know a system know its pumping behaviour, and that knowledge is genuinely local.
THEY ARE SHALLOW AND EXPOSED. Wind has a large effect on shallow water with no shelter, and it drives the food, the colour and the fish. Temperature swings faster than in deeper water.
WEED GROWTH IS SEASONAL AND SOMETIMES MANAGED. Cutting for flood management changes the fishery abruptly.
WHAT LIVES IN THEM. In Britain: roach, bream, tench, rudd, perch and pike, with zander established in several systems, and eels historically in great numbers. It is a coarse fishery of considerable quality and a well-known pike and zander fishery.
AND THE CONSERVATION NOTE THAT BELONGS HERE. Fen drainage destroyed one of Europe's great wetlands, and what remains is an engineered remnant. The fishery exists because of that transformation. Water levels are managed for agriculture and flood risk rather than for fish, abstraction and nutrient pressure are real, and the ecological status of these waters is a live management question rather than a stable background.
The same landscape across the North Sea, and what is different about it
The Fens are one instance of a landscape type that runs around the southern North Sea, and the Dutch, Flemish and north German versions of it are larger, older and more completely engineered. An angler who understands the Fens understands most of it, and three differences are worth knowing.
THE SCALE IS DIFFERENT. In the Netherlands a very large share of the surface is water and almost none of it is unmanaged: canals, ditches, polder drains and engineered river channels form a connected network across the whole country, at a controlled level, holding fish everywhere. The Fens are a region; the Dutch version is a country.
THE LEVEL IS A DECISION IN BOTH, AND MORE ACTIVELY SO THERE. Pumping stations, sluices and weirs set depth, flow and even the direction of movement, and periodic flushing changes clarity and temperature across a whole network at once. A drain that fished well last week can be a different water this week for reasons that are entirely administrative.
THE PREDATOR FISHERY IS THE SAME AND IS READ DIFFERENTLY. Pike, perch and zander dominate both, and where the water is turbid the zander does better than either because its eye works in low light — which is the ecological reason Dutch lure fishing developed the vertical techniques it exported to the rest of Europe. The Fenland drains and the Dutch canals are, functionally, the same fishery with different tackle conventions on it.
AND THE MIGRATION PROBLEM IS SHARED AND SEVERE. A landscape of dikes, pumps, weirs and barriers is a landscape of barriers to fish, and eel above all. Both systems are the subject of substantial fish-pass and reconnection programmes for exactly that reason, and the eel's conservation status is the sharpest expression of what is at stake.
THE HAZARD IS ALSO SHARED. Steep revetted banks with no gradual margin, cold water, and no climbable point for a considerable distance — which is why a drain that looks entirely harmless is one of the more dangerous places in this catalogue to fall into.
