Fish are not distributed evenly, and the single largest variable in fishing is being in the right place — which is a skill of observation rather than of tackle.
Almost every question a new angler asks is about tackle, and almost every answer that would improve their fishing is about location. Fish occupy a small fraction of any water, and the fraction is predictable if you know what to look for.
The underlying logic is always the same and applies from a canal to a coastline: fish position themselves where the cost of staying is low and the supply of food is high. Everything else follows.
IN FLOWING WATER, that means the edges between fast and slow. A fish sitting in slack water beside a fast current expends almost nothing and has food delivered past its nose. Those edges — creases, the downstream ends of weed beds, the inside of bends, the slack behind a boulder — are where fish are, and they are visible from the bank if you look at the surface for long enough.
IN STILLWATER, it means structure and change. Depth changes, weed beds, overhanging trees, islands, and the point where a gravel bar meets silt all concentrate food and provide cover. Wind matters too: a sustained wind pushes surface water and food downwind, and fish follow it, which means the uncomfortable bank is frequently the productive one.
AT SEA, it means tide and ground. The tide moves water past fixed features, and fish sit where that delivery is concentrated: gullies, the ends of bars, tide races, and the edges of rough ground.
The discipline is the same in all three: spend ten minutes looking before you spend an hour fishing.
What to look at, in order
Look at the surface first. Creases, boils, slicks, ripples that stop and start, and any place where two speeds of water meet are all telling you about what is happening below.
Look at the margins and the far bank. Overhanging trees, reed beds, undercut banks and any structure at the waterline all hold fish, and they are frequently much closer than people fish.
Look for the fish. Bubbles over a feeding tench, coloured water where something has stirred silt, swirls at the surface, fry scattering, and birds working over bait are all direct evidence, and direct evidence beats any theory about where fish ought to be.
Look at the water at its lowest. On a beach, at low tide; on a river, in summer; on a stillwater, from any high bank on a bright day. What you can see then is what is there when you cannot see it.
And look at what the wind and tide are doing, because both move food, and food is what everything else follows.
