Fish in current sit where the food arrives without the effort of holding in it, which makes eddies, seams and obstructions predictable rather than lucky.
Moving water imposes a constant energy cost on any fish that stays in it. The consequence is a simple and reliable principle: fish position themselves where the ratio of food delivered to energy spent is best.
That produces recognisable features. Behind any obstruction — a boulder, a bridge pier, a fallen tree — there is a low-velocity pocket, often with a reverse flow, where a fish can sit almost still while the current a metre away carries food past. The boundary between fast and slow water is a seam, and it is the single most productive feature in moving water because it is the edge of a conveyor belt.
The same logic scales up. Tidal races, headland eddies and the back of a sandbank in a running tide are the marine versions, and they hold fish for the same reason.
Reading the features
The features worth recognising are few and repeat everywhere. Seams, where two speeds of water meet, visible as a line of differing surface texture. Eddies, where flow reverses behind an obstruction. Slack pockets, immediately upstream of an obstruction as well as behind it, because water piles and slows there. Undercuts, where the current has excavated a bank and left cover with delivery.
Depth interacts with all of it: flow is slower at the bed than at the surface, which is why a fish can hold on the bottom in water that looks unfishable from above.
In tidal water the same features exist and move. A race that is unfishable at peak flow becomes a holding area an hour later, and the productive window at any given feature is often short and repeatable across tides.

What anglers do with it
The practical translation is to fish the edges rather than the middle: present at the seam rather than in the fast water, and cover the downstream side of obstructions.
It also changes presentation. A bait or fly that behaves naturally in current is one moving at the speed of the water carrying it, which is why drag is the central problem in river fly fishing and why a bait bumping too fast is refused.
What the mechanism does not tell you is whether fish are feeding. It tells you where they will be if they are, which is a genuinely useful thing to know and a smaller claim than 'fish here and you will catch'.

Currents with no tide behind them
Most of the currents this record describes are tidal streams, and several of the strongest currents in Europe are not tidal at all. They are worth separating because they behave differently and are planned for differently.
DENSITY EXCHANGE THROUGH A NARROW GAP. Where two bodies of water at different salinity or temperature meet through a strait, the denser one flows in beneath and the lighter one flows out above, continuously and in both directions at once. Gibraltar does this between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean; the Danish straits do it between the North Sea and the Baltic. The surface current and the deep current can run opposite ways, which is invisible from a boat and decisive for anything drifting.
BASIN-TO-BASIN EXCHANGE WITH A TIDAL COMPONENT. The Strait of Messina exchanges between the Tyrrhenian and Ionian basins and does have a tidal element, which is why it reverses — and the density difference is what makes the reversal violent, producing overfalls, upwelling and standing waves in a sea that otherwise has almost none. The upwelling brings deep-water animals to the surface, which is why the strait's fishery is unlike anything around it.
WIND-DRIVEN AND DENSITY-DRIVEN COASTAL CURRENTS. A persistent wind sets water along a coast and a return flow beneath it; a river outflow drives a plume that hugs one shore depending on latitude. Neither reverses on a cycle, so a current that was running yesterday is probably running today — and probably will not turn while somebody waits.
WHERE TWO SEAS MEET OVER A SHOAL, as at the northern tip of Jutland, opposing currents meet over shallow ground and produce water that moves fast and unpredictably in a place shallow enough to tempt somebody to wade it.
AND ENGINEERED FLOW, which is the fastest-changing of all: barrier openings, sluices, locks and turbines start and stop water on a schedule.
THE PLANNING DIFFERENCE. A tidal stream can be waited out; slack arrives. A density or wind-driven current cannot, and an engineered one ends when somebody decides. That is the distinction to make before entering water anywhere with movement in it.
