Presenting bait in strong tide

In a running tide the problem is not finding fish but keeping a bait where you put it, and every part of the solution — lead, line, rig and timing — trades holding power against presentation.
A strong tide is the normal condition in a great deal of sea fishing, and it turns a simple problem into a set of linked ones.
The water pushes on everything in it, and it pushes on the LINE far more than on the lead. A hundred metres of line in a two-knot flow presents a large surface to the current, and the resulting bow drags the terminal tackle downstream regardless of how heavy the lead is. This is why line diameter matters more than lead weight past a certain point, and why braid holds bottom with far less lead than nylon of the same strength.
The lead has to resist the remaining force. A plain lead resists by weight alone and rolls when the force exceeds friction. A gripped lead has wires that bite into sand or mud and hold until pulled free deliberately, which converts a weight problem into an anchoring one and allows much lighter leads in the same flow.
The bait has to survive. Current strips soft baits, spins them, and washes scent away faster than it accumulates. Whipping baits with elastic thread, choosing tougher baits for the strongest flow, and accepting shorter presentations are the responses.
And the timing has to be chosen. Tidal flow is not constant: it accelerates from slack, peaks, and decays back to slack, and the practical answer to an unfishable flow is frequently to fish either side of it rather than to fight it.
The variables, in the order worth adjusting them
Line diameter first, because it costs nothing in presentation and has the largest effect. Thinner line means less drag, less bow and less lead needed for the same hold.
The amount of line out second. A shorter line at a steeper angle has less surface in the flow than a long one at a shallow angle, which is why holding bottom often becomes possible simply by fishing closer.
Lead type third. Gripped leads transform holding ability on sand and mud and do nothing on rock, where the wires have nothing to bite.
Lead weight fourth, and last, because it is the adjustment anglers reach for first and the one with the worst side effects: a heavier lead casts less well, presents worse, and is more likely to bury the bait.
Rig geometry throughout. A long flowing trace moves attractively in current and tangles; a short one presents statically and does not. Which is right depends on whether the fish are hunting by scent along the bottom or intercepting movement.
And the option of not resisting at all: a bait allowed to trundle with the tide searches ground, and in some fisheries that is the method rather than a failure of it.

Why the tide is worth fishing rather than avoiding
The temptation is to treat current as an obstacle. It is also the reason the fishing is good.
Moving water transports food, and predators position themselves where the transport concentrates — at the edges of channels, behind structure, and where a flow slows and drops what it is carrying.
Moving water also triggers feeding. A great many inshore species feed on a defined part of the tidal cycle and are close to inactive on the rest of it, so the productive window is set by the water rather than by the clock.
The tidal cycle itself follows the astronomical pattern covered separately: springs run harder and produce more movement, neaps less. Neither is generally better, and which suits depends on the ground and the species — a mark that is unfishable on a big spring can be excellent on a neap and vice versa.
The practical conclusion is to plan around the state of tide rather than around the hour, which is the single largest difference between sea fishing and most freshwater fishing.
