Reading a river for fish

A river is a repeating sequence of the same few features, and each one holds fish for a different reason. Learning the sequence means arriving at an unfamiliar river already knowing where to look.
RIVERS REPEAT THEMSELVES. Almost every river of moderate gradient runs through the same cycle over and over: a shallow broken RIFFLE where water accelerates over gravel, a deeper smooth GLIDE where it settles, and a slow deep POOL where it has scoured out the bed. Learn what each does and an unfamiliar river becomes readable in minutes.
THE RIFFLE is fast, shallow, broken and highly oxygenated. Insect life is abundant in the gravel; fish feed here in warm weather and low oxygen, and small fish use it because larger ones are exposed in the shallow water. The head and tail of a riffle are more productive than the middle.
THE GLIDE is the transitional water — even depth, steady flow, smooth surface. It is where the fish that feed in the riffle rest, and it is the most consistently overlooked water on any river because it looks featureless.
THE POOL is deep, slow and the refuge. Fish hold here in cold water, in bright light, in low flow, and when disturbed. The head of a pool, where the riffle above it drops in, is usually the single most productive spot on the sequence, because food arrives there continuously.
WITHIN ANY OF THOSE, FOUR FEATURES CONCENTRATE FISH.
SEAMS, where fast and slow water run side by side. A fish sits in the slow side and takes food carried past in the fast side, which is the best food-to-effort ratio available and the single most reliable place to find fish in moving water.
OBSTRUCTIONS — boulders, fallen trees, bridge piers. Each creates a slack pocket in front, beside and behind it, and fish use all three.
UNDERCUT BANKS AND OVERHANGING COVER, which provide overhead protection. On any river with predators or herons, cover matters as much as flow.
DEPTH CHANGES, especially the drop-off at the tail of a pool and the lip where a pool empties into the next riffle.
HOW TO READ IT FROM THE BANK. Look at the SURFACE. Smooth water over a rough bed means depth. A standing wave means a shallow obstruction. A slick or a boil means an upwelling from something below. A line of foam is a current seam and it marks where food is being carried. Colour changes mark depth changes.
AND THE THING THAT CHANGES ALL OF IT: WATER LEVEL. A feature that holds fish at normal height may be unfishable in a flood and dry in a drought, and the same river at two heights is two rivers.
Reading a river somebody built
The features above — the crease, the seam, the slack behind a boulder, the deep outside of a bend — are features of a river that has been left to make its own channel. Most large continental European rivers have not been, and the reading changes accordingly.
THE GROYNE FIELD IS THE DEFINING FEATURE OF THE BIG ENGINEERED RIVERS. The Rhine, the Elbe, the Oder, the Po and the lower Loire are trained between rock or timber structures built out from the bank at intervals to concentrate flow into a navigation channel and keep it scoured. Each groyne creates the same set of features, repeated hundreds of times: fast water off the tip, a sharp seam along its edge, slack and back-eddy in the bay behind it, and a scour hole where the two meet. That is a crease, a slack and a deep hole in a known arrangement, which makes an engineered river far more readable than a natural one — the features do not have to be found, only chosen between.
THE MAIN CHANNEL IS DEEPER AND FASTER THAN IT LOOKS, because that is what it was built to be, and the revetted bank gives no gradual margin to anybody who goes in.
CANALISED AND POLDER SYSTEMS ARE THE OPPOSITE PROBLEM: uniform width, uniform depth, controlled level and almost no natural feature at all. The reading there is entirely about structure and margin — bridge piers, moored hulls, lock approaches, weed edges, the shade line, the corner where the wall turns — because that is the only relief there is.
WEIRS, LOCKS AND SLUICES ARE FEATURES AND SCHEDULES AT ONCE. They concentrate fish reliably because they concentrate flow and food, and they do it when they are operating rather than continuously, which is a water authority's decision.
AND A RESTORED RIVER READS LIKE A NATURAL ONE AGAIN. Denmark's Skjern and a growing number of continental rivers have had straightened channels remeandered and floodplains reconnected deliberately. Where that has happened the features above return — and the fishery frequently returns with them, which is the strongest available demonstration that habitat rather than stocking is what rebuilds a run.
