River levels, and what a flood changes

A river coming up, at its peak, and falling are three different fisheries. Most of what is said about high water is true of exactly one of them, and knowing which is the whole skill.

Rising water undermines banks and collapses them, converts familiar crossings into impassable flows, and carries debris. Moving water at knee depth exerts enough force to take an adult off their feet, and a person swept into a flooded river is very unlikely to be able to self-rescue.

What reduces it: Do not wade in rising or high water. Check published level and flow data before setting out rather than judging at the bank. Stay back from soft or undercut banks, fish with somebody else, and treat a river that has come up since you arrived as a reason to leave.

Worse when:

  • Water still rising, when the bank you are standing on is being undermined
  • Cold water, where immersion adds cold shock to the current
  • Darkness, and unfamiliar banks

A FLOOD IS A SEQUENCE, NOT A STATE, and the fishing is completely different at each stage.

THE RISE. Water comes up, colours, and carries debris. Fish move out of the main flow towards the margins and any slack they can find, and many move up onto flooded ground that was dry the day before because it is suddenly full of food. Feeding is often intense at the start of a rise, and it can stop abruptly as the water becomes heavily coloured and full of debris.

THE PEAK. Fast, dirty, debris-laden and, on many rivers, unfishable and unsafe. Fish are sheltering rather than feeding. This is the stage most anglers see and generalise from, and it is the least representative.

THE FALL. The water clears from the top down, the flow eases, and food dislodged by the flood is still moving. This is very widely regarded as the best fishing of the whole cycle, and the reasoning is sound: food availability is elevated, the fish have not fed properly for a day or more, visibility has returned enough for them to hunt, and the extra colour gives cover.

WHAT ELSE A FLOOD ACTUALLY DOES.

IT TRIGGERS MIGRATION. A rise in level is the cue that moves migratory salmonids upriver, and on many rivers the run is effectively a series of movements each triggered by a spate. This is the single most important practical consequence of river level on any salmon or sea trout river.

IT REARRANGES THE BED. Gravel moves, pools scour and fill, and features change. A river after a large flood is not the river you knew, and the first trip afterwards is a survey.

IT CHANGES TEMPERATURE, usually downwards and sometimes sharply, which slows fish independently of everything else.

IT MOVES FOOD, both by dislodging invertebrates and by washing terrestrial material in.

HOW TO USE THE INFORMATION. Most countries publish river level and flow data for gauged rivers, updated frequently and freely available. Learning what the normal range is for the water you fish, and what the number looks like at each stage of a spate, converts 'the river is up' from a guess into a measurement. That is the single most useful habit available to a river angler.

AND THE SAFETY POSITION IS NOT A FOOTNOTE. Rising water is the most dangerous condition in freshwater fishing. Banks become undercut and collapse, familiar crossings become impassable, and moving water at knee depth will take an adult off their feet. Wading in a rising river is not a judgement call to be made at the water's edge; it is a decision made before setting out.

Rivers that rise on a sunny day, and rivers that rise on a schedule

This record assumes rain: water falls on a catchment, the river rises, colours and falls again. A great many European rivers do something else entirely, and in two of the three cases the weather gives no warning at all.

GLACIAL AND SNOWMELT RIVERS RISE WITH TEMPERATURE. Melt is driven by sun and air temperature as much as by rain, so a bright still afternoon puts an Icelandic, Alpine or northern Scandinavian river UP while the sky says nothing is happening. The daily peak arrives in the afternoon and evening, hours after the warmth that caused it, and the seasonal peak arrives with the spring melt regardless of rainfall. An angler waiting for cloud before worrying about the level has the sign inverted.

REGULATED RIVERS RISE ON AN OPERATING DECISION. Hydroelectric generation, reservoir compensation releases and irrigation abstraction change flow on a schedule set by a control room. Across northern Sweden, the Alps, the Pyrenees, the Iberian reservoirs and a great many other catchments, the level in front of somebody is a management output rather than a weather output. It can rise fast, it can rise in clear weather, and it can rise at night.

KARST AND SPRING-FED RIVERS BARELY RISE AT ALL. Where a river emerges from porous limestone or lava, the rock filters and buffers it: flow and temperature are remarkably stable, the river does not colour in ordinary rain, and it fishes consistently across a season in a way a surface-fed river cannot. Iceland's spring-fed rivers and the karst rivers of Slovenia and the Balkans are the European examples, and their stability is the reason they hold the fisheries they do.

AND SEMI-ARID RIVERS ARE NOT PRESENT ALL YEAR. In North Africa, southern Iberia and the drier Mediterranean, summer flow falls to a chain of disconnected pools and the fish concentrate into them. The flood-and-drought cycle is the organising fact of the year rather than an event within it, and a storm on high ground can send water down a dry bed hours later and many kilometres away, in clear weather, where somebody is standing.
