Fishing the surf

Surf stirs food out of the sand, colours the water and gives fish cover to feed in the shallows — and the features that make it productive are the same ones that make it dangerous.

Rip currents carry a wading angler seaward faster than they can walk or swim back, and the features that identify a rip are the same ones that identify productive water.

What reduces it: Fish the edges of a rip rather than wading into it; if caught, do not swim against it — move parallel to the beach or float and signal for help.

A surf beach with no waves is close to a desert. The surf is what makes it fish.

Breaking waves do three things. They lift food — worms, small crustaceans, molluscs and sand eels — out of the sand and hold it in suspension. They colour the water with suspended sediment, which gives fish cover to come into water shallow enough to be dangerous for them. And they generate currents along and away from the beach that transport that food along predictable paths.

So fish move into the surf zone to feed, often in water shallower than seems plausible, and often much closer to the angler than the length of the cast suggests. The single most common error on a surf beach is casting over the fish.

The features that matter are readable at low water and invisible at high. A GUTTER or trough is a channel running parallel to the beach between the sand and a bar; it holds water at all states of tide and it is a highway. A BAR is the raised sand outside it, over which waves break. A RIP is the outflow where water that has piled up behind the bar escapes seaward through a gap, and it carries food out with it. A HOLE or scour is a deeper depression, often beside a groyne, rock or stream mouth.

All four are visible in the wave pattern once you know what to look at: waves break over the shallow and pass over the deep, so a flat unbroken lane through a line of white water is deeper water, and it is very often a rip.

The rip is the fishing feature and the hazard

This is the connection that matters most and it is under-stated in angling sources.

A rip current forms where water carried shoreward by breaking waves returns seaward through a gap in a bar. It is identifiable from shore as a gap in the breaking waves, often with discoloured or churned water, sometimes with debris or foam moving out through it.

That is exactly the feature a surf angler is taught to look for, because the outflow carries suspended food and the deeper channel gives fish access. It is also the leading cause of surf-zone rescues and drownings, because a person wading in it is moved seaward faster than they can walk back.

The guidance for somebody caught in one is consistent: do not try to swim directly back against it, because the current is faster than a person can swim for long; move parallel to the beach out of the flow, or float and signal.

For an angler the practical version is simpler. Fish the edges of a rip; do not wade into it. And treat a feature that is drawing food out to sea as a feature that will draw you out too.

Presentation in moving water

The problem the surf sets is holding a bait where it was put while the water tries to move it, and doing so without anchoring it so firmly that it looks wrong.

Gripped leads with wires that bite into the sand are the standard answer where the sideways drift is strong; plain leads that roll are used deliberately where the intention is to let the bait search along the beach with the current.

Baits have to survive the cast and the wash, which is why surf baits are commonly whipped to the hook with elastic thread. A bait that comes off in the surf is fishing nothing at all, and the angler has no way to know.

Rigs are chosen for aerodynamics as much as for presentation, because distance frequently matters and a bait streaming behind a lead casts far better than one hanging beside it.

And the retrieve matters more than on flat ground: a bait dragged slowly back through the gutter on the retrieve is fishing productive water, and a rapid wind-in is not.

Surf beaches around the world

The technique is one of the most globally distributed in sea angling and the vocabulary varies more than the practice.

What a British angler calls beachcasting, an Australian calls beach fishing, an American calls surfcasting or surf fishing, and a South African calls surf angling. Gutters are gutters in Australia and South Africa, troughs or sloughs in North America, and gullies in Britain.

The scale differs substantially. South African, Australian and Namibian surf beaches with large swell and steep gradients support heavy tackle and long casts for kob, galjoen, shad and sharks. Atlantic North American beaches produce striped bass, bluefish and red drum. Northern European beaches are lower-energy and produce cod, bass, flatfish and rays, frequently at night. Mediterranean beaches are lower-energy still and are fished with much lighter tackle for bream and bass.

The reading of the beach transfers between all of them without modification, which is why it is the part worth learning.
