Barometric pressure and fishing

The angling literature is confident that it does; the scientific evidence is thin, inconsistent and confounded by the weather that accompanies pressure changes.

Few subjects in angling carry more confident folklore and less supporting evidence than barometric pressure.

The physical starting point is unpromising. Atmospheric pressure changes are small relative to the pressure change a fish experiences moving a short distance vertically in water — a change of a few tens of millibars is equivalent to a fish moving well under half a metre. A fish that can move up and down freely experiences far larger pressure swings than the weather produces, routinely and without apparent consequence.

The proposed mechanisms usually involve swim bladder sensitivity, and they are plausible in principle for species with particular anatomy. What is missing is consistent evidence that the effect on behaviour is real and separable from everything else that changes when pressure changes.

Why the question is hard to answer

Pressure does not change alone. A falling barometer arrives with wind, cloud, changing light, rain and often a temperature shift, and each of those has a documented effect on fish behaviour. Attributing the resulting change to pressure specifically requires separating variables that move together in nature.

That is why the honest scientific position is unresolved rather than negative. There is some experimental work suggesting behavioural responses in some species, and there is a great deal of angler observation, and neither adds up to a reliable rule.

What to do with the folklore

The practical advice usually attached to pressure — fish the period before a front arrives, expect a slow spell after it passes — may well be useful advice arrived at for the wrong reason. Light, wind and temperature all change across a front in ways that have better-supported effects.

That matters more than it sounds. An angler who watches the barometer and an angler who watches light and wind will often fish at the same times, and only one of them has a mechanism that survives scrutiny.

So the recommendation is to watch what is well supported — light level, wind direction and strength, water temperature, and recent rainfall — and to treat pressure as an interesting correlate rather than a cause.
