Feeding windows

Light level, temperature, prey availability and digestion state explain most of what anglers call feeding windows — and they explain it better than the calendar-based systems that claim to predict it.
Anglers observe that fish feed in bursts rather than continuously, and that observation is sound. The explanations attached to it are often not.
Four factors carry most of the weight. Light level, because most predators have an optimum at which their vision outperforms their prey's — which is why dawn and dusk recur across so many species. Temperature, because it sets metabolic rate and therefore how often a fish needs to eat. Prey availability, because a predator feeds when there is something to feed on. And digestion, because a fish that has eaten a large meal is not looking for another one.
That last factor is the most under-appreciated. A pike that has taken a large prey fish may not feed again for days, and the resulting pattern looks like a mysterious switch-off.
Why dawn and dusk recur
The crepuscular pattern is not universal but is very common, and the mechanism is a light-level window in which the predator can see well enough to hunt while the prey cannot see well enough to escape reliably.
Species with light-gathering adaptations — the tapetum lucidum in zander, walleye and many nocturnal predators — extend that window at the low end, which is why they dominate at times when sight-hunting species have stopped.
Water clarity shifts the whole window. In coloured water the useful light level is reached earlier and lost later, so the same species may feed through the middle of the day. In gin-clear shallow water the window can be very short.
That is a mechanism that predicts a pattern rather than a time, which makes it more useful than a table and less satisfying.

The systems that claim to predict it
Solunar tables and similar systems assert that specific times can be calculated in advance. The evidence for them is weak, and where studies find effects they are small and confounded with tide and light.
FishingHQ's position is that the mechanisms above explain most of what these systems claim to predict, and explain it in a way that transfers between waters and species. An angler who understands why dawn works does not need a table to know when to fish an unfamiliar venue.
The honest caveat is that fish do not read mechanisms either. Feeding is variable, individual and frequently surprising, and any framework that claims to remove that is overselling. What the mechanisms buy is a better prior, not a schedule.

Where it matters
- Sea fishingThe discipline where the window is set by something other than the clock. Tide state, light and water movement combine to produce short productive periods that a shore angler either fishes or misses, and arriving for a convenient afternoon rather than for the right two hours is the commonest reason a good mark blanks.
- SurfcastingThe clearest case: fish move into the surf to feed on food the waves have dislodged, and they do it on particular states of tide and particular light. The method is otherwise identical from one hour to the next, so the window is doing all of the work.
