Dawn and dusk: what changes at the light edges

A genuine and mechanistic effect rather than folklore: at low light a predator that sees better than its prey has an advantage it does not have at either extreme, and the window is short.

THE MECHANISM IS OPTICAL AND IT IS WELL FOUNDED. At intermediate light levels — the period during and around twilight — many predatory fish retain useful vision while their prey's ability to detect an approaching threat is degraded. The predator's advantage is largest in that window and smaller in bright daylight, when prey can see it coming, and smaller again in full darkness, when the predator cannot see either.

That asymmetry is the reason dawn and dusk are productive, and it is a considerably better explanation than 'fish feed at dawn' because it predicts the exceptions.

WHAT FOLLOWS PRACTICALLY.

IT IS SHORT AND IT MOVES. The useful window is measured in tens of minutes, it shifts with the date, and being set up and fishing before it starts is the whole discipline. Arriving at first light means arriving after it.

IT IS SPECIES-SPECIFIC. Species that hunt by sight in low light gain most; species that feed by scent or touch gain little; and some species are genuinely more active in full daylight. The generalisation is about a mechanism, not about all fish.

IT IS STRONGEST IN CLEAR WATER. In heavily coloured water sight is already limited for both parties and the twilight advantage is much reduced, which is one reason the effect seems unreliable to anglers who fish coloured venues.

FISH MOVE SHALLOWER AND CLOSER. Reduced light gives cover, so fish will use shallow, open and marginal water at dusk that they avoid in the middle of the day. This is why the margins are worth fishing first and why the long cast is frequently the wrong move at last light.

DUSK AND DAWN ARE NOT SYMMETRICAL. Dusk is preceded by a day of warming, so surface water is at its warmest and insect activity is usually at its peak; dawn follows a night of cooling and is the coldest point of the daily cycle. In cold conditions the evening is frequently better; in hot conditions the morning is.

AND THE PART THAT IS FREQUENTLY OVERSTATED. Precise timing systems built on sunrise and sunset tables imply a precision the underlying biology does not have. The window is real, it varies with cloud, water clarity, season and species, and it is better found by observation on the water you fish than by a table.

THE SAFETY POINT IS NOT INCIDENTAL: the productive window ends in darkness, on ground walked in daylight, and a great many incidents happen to anglers who stayed for the last twenty minutes and then had to leave in the dark.

Latitudes where the light edge lasts all night, or does not arrive for months

The predator advantage described above depends on a transition between light levels, and on a daily cycle producing one twice a day. Both of those are properties of temperate latitudes.

ABOVE THE ARCTIC CIRCLE THE CYCLE STOPS. For weeks around midsummer the sun does not set, and for weeks around midwinter it does not rise. In the summer case the effect is not that the light edge disappears but that it STRETCHES: the low-sun period lasts for hours rather than minutes, the water never reaches full darkness, and the concentrated advantage that produces a sharp dawn feeding period is spread out and diluted. Northern Scandinavian and Icelandic anglers accordingly fish through what a British angler would call the middle of the night, and the productive window is long and shallow rather than short and intense.

IN THE WINTER CASE THE OPPOSITE HAPPENS. A few hours of twilight in the middle of the day are the whole light budget, and the entire day is a light edge. Ice fishing and winter coastal fishing at those latitudes are organised around that short window rather than around dawn and dusk within it.

AT MEDITERRANEAN LATITUDES THE EDGE IS SHARPER, NOT LONGER. Closer to the equator the sun rises and sets more steeply, so the transition is quicker: the useful low-light period at a Greek or Maltese mark is genuinely shorter than at a Scottish one, and the practical consequence is that being in position beforehand matters more.

AND CLEAR WATER LENGTHENS THE EFFECT FROM THE OTHER DIRECTION. Light penetrates further in oligotrophic water, so a Mediterranean fish that is uncomfortable in bright conditions is uncomfortable deeper down, and the shallow-water feeding window at the light edges is correspondingly more important. That is why so much Mediterranean shore fishing happens at night and at first light and so little of it in the middle of a summer day.
