The moon has a strong, well-evidenced effect through tides and a real one on some spawning cycles — and a much weaker case as a general predictor of feeding.
This subject deserves separating into parts that are very differently supported, because collapsing them is how a solid mechanism ends up validating a weak claim.
The moon drives tides. That is not in doubt, it is quantitatively predictable, and its effect on sea fishing is large and immediate — spring and neap tides change flow rate, water depth and the timing of feeding on almost every coastal mark. Anyone fishing tidal water is fishing the moon whether they think about it or not.
The moon affects some spawning cycles. There is genuine evidence for lunar-linked spawning in a number of marine species, particularly on reefs, and for some grunion-style timed spawning events.
The moon as a general predictor of freshwater feeding activity — the solunar tradition — is where evidence becomes thin.
Where the effect is real and measurable
Tidal range varies with lunar phase in a way that is fully predictable, and it changes fishing materially: spring tides move more water faster, alter which marks are fishable, and shift the timing of the productive window.
Night light is the second real effect. A full moon on a clear night substantially increases the light available underwater, which affects visual predators and their prey. There is reasonable evidence for altered activity patterns around that, and it is a light effect rather than a mystical one.
Lunar-linked spawning is well documented in a number of reef species and in some diadromous fish, and where it occurs it produces genuine, predictable aggregation.

Where it becomes folklore
The solunar tradition — that specific lunar periods predict peak feeding across species and water types — is very widely repeated and has never been convincingly demonstrated. Studies that look for it tend to find weak, inconsistent effects that do not survive controlling for tide, light and season.
That is not a claim that it is false, and FishingHQ labels it unresolved rather than debunked. It is a claim that the confidence with which it is asserted exceeds the evidence supporting it by a wide margin.
The practical position: fish tides where tides exist, pay attention to light including moonlight, and treat solunar tables as a tradition rather than a forecast.
