The one purchase where the option that grips best on wet rock is also the one most likely to move an invasive organism into the next river — which is why some places have banned it.

Slips, trips and falls — Can cause serious injury or death
A foot loses grip on algae-covered rock and the wader goes down in moving water, which is the ordinary beginning of the drowning mechanism that kills waders — a fall, then a foot trapped between boulders with current behind the body. Studs on a boat deck, ladder or wet timber produce the same fall onto a hard surface instead.
What reduces it: Match the sole to the bed, use a wading staff and move one foot at a time with weight on the other, wear a belt on chest waders, inspect and replace worn soles and missing studs before a trip, and change out of studs before stepping onto a boat.
Worse when:
- On smooth algae-covered bedrock, which is the surface plain rubber handles worst.
- In rising or coloured water, where the bed cannot be seen and a foot is placed blind.
- Late in a session, when fatigue has already shortened the stride and lowered the feet.
Biosecurity and disease transfer — Can cause injury needing treatment
Felt holds water, silt and microscopic organisms deep inside the fibre and stays damp for far longer than it looks. Didymo — a freshwater diatom that forms thick mats and is often called rock snot — along with invertebrates, fish pathogens and plant fragments, all travel between catchments this way, and an angler moving between rivers in a week is a faster vector than any natural spread.
What reduces it: Follow the check, clean and dry guidance rather than rinsing; treat drying time as days rather than hours for felt; keep separate boots for separate catchments where that is practical; and prefer rubber where a trip crosses catchments or borders. Establish before travelling whether felt is permitted at the destination.
Worse when:
- Travelling between countries or catchments within a few days, which is exactly what a fishing trip looks like.
- In cool damp weather, when nothing dries between sessions.
Underfoot grip is the difference between wading a river and swimming one, and it is decided almost entirely by what is glued to the bottom of the boot. There are three answers and none of them is best at everything.
FELT grips wet algae-covered rock better than any other material in ordinary use. It works because a dense fibrous mat conforms to an irregular surface and does not aquaplane on the slime layer the way a moulded rubber lug does. It is also, for exactly the same reason, an extremely effective transport medium: it holds water, silt and microscopic organisms deep inside the fibre where rinsing does not reach and where drying takes far longer than a boot appears to need.
RUBBER sheds water and dirt, dries quickly and is far easier to clean properly. Modern sticky compounds have closed much of the gap on wet rock but have not closed all of it, and on smooth algae-covered bedrock the difference is still noticeable.
STUDS — tungsten carbide or steel, screwed or hammered into either sole — work differently again. They bite through the slime layer into the rock beneath rather than gripping the surface of it, which is why they transform rubber on greasy stone. They are noisy, they transmit vibration into the water, they are poor on smooth hard rock where they skate, and they are actively dangerous on a boat deck or an aluminium ladder.
Which means the choice is not a preference. It is a reading of the bed being waded, in a place whose rules on one of the options may not be the same as the rules next door.

What it does
Provides the friction that keeps a wading angler upright on a bed of wet, algae-covered, irregular rock — the surface on which almost all wading falls happen. Grip underfoot is the primary control on wading safety, ahead of depth and ahead of flow, because a person who does not fall does not have to swim. The same interface is also the principal route by which aquatic organisms are carried overland from one catchment to another, which is why the material choice is a biosecurity decision as well as a safety one.
How to choose one
- Read the bed, not the brochure. Smooth algae-covered bedrock and large greasy boulders are where felt or studs earn their keep; gravel, sand and clean cobble need neither.
- Studs bite THROUGH the slime layer; felt grips the surface OF it. That is why studs transform rubber on greasy stone and do very little on clean gravel, and why studs skate on smooth hard rock where felt holds.
- Never wear studs on a boat deck, a ladder, a pontoon or wet timber. They skate on all four, and a fall on a hard surface is a worse outcome than a fall in a river.
- Assume felt cannot be cleaned to a standard you can verify. It holds water and silt inside the fibre, and a rinse that visibly cleans the surface does not reach it — which is the whole reason for the restrictions.
- Check whether felt is permitted where you are going BEFORE buying boots, not at the water. Some jurisdictions and some individual fisheries prohibit it, the position differs between neighbouring countries, and FishingHQ does not state what any current rule is.
- A wading staff does more for stability than any sole does, on any bed, and costs less than the boots.
- Soles are consumables. Felt wears smooth and stops gripping, studs fall out, and rubber lugs round off — all three fail gradually enough that the wearer does not notice until they slip.
What the numbers mean
There is no rating scale for wading grip and no standard test behind the marketing terms, so 'sticky rubber' and 'high-friction compound' describe an intention rather than a measurement. What can be compared is construction: whether studs are screwed into threaded receivers or hammered in, since screwed studs can be replaced and removed for travel and hammered ones cannot; the stud tip material, with tungsten carbide holding an edge far longer than steel; and whether the sole is replaceable at all, which decides whether the boot outlasts its grip. Felt thickness matters less than felt density. Note that a boot sold as felt-compatible in one market may be sold without felt in another for regulatory rather than performance reasons.
Care, and how it fails
The failure that matters is gradual and silent: felt polishes, studs shed, and the wearer adjusts their walking without noticing until a foot goes on a rock they have crossed a hundred times. Inspect soles before a trip rather than after a slip, and count the studs.
Cleaning is where the two problems meet. Check, clean and dry is the standing guidance and it is considerably harder to satisfy with felt than with rubber, because the fibre retains water for days and organisms survive in it for as long as it stays damp. Rubber can be scrubbed, inspected and confirmed dry; felt can only be scrubbed, and confirmation is not available. Between waters — and especially between catchments or countries — that difference is the entire argument, and it is why a rinse in the car park is not what the guidance is asking for.
