Turbidity and visibility

Turbidity shortens the distance at which anything can be seen, which shifts the balance from sight-hunting to vibration and scent for fish and anglers alike.
Suspended particles scatter and absorb light, and the practical effect is that visual range collapses. In heavily coloured water a fish may not see more than a few centimetres, and the sensory hierarchy reorders accordingly.
The species that cope best are those whose senses were never primarily visual — catfish with barbels and body-surface taste, sturgeon with electroreception, and predators with a well-developed lateral line. The species that suffer most are those that hunt by sight at distance.
Some predators actively benefit. Zander and walleye carry a reflective tapetum lucidum that gives them an advantage in low light, and coloured water extends the conditions in which that advantage operates. That is why turbidity is not simply bad for fishing; it changes who has the advantage.
Different kinds of coloured water
Turbidity from suspended sediment after rain is mechanically different from tannin staining in a peat-fed water, and different again from an algal bloom.
Sediment scatters light broadly and reduces visibility at all wavelengths. Tannin staining absorbs shorter wavelengths preferentially, which shifts the surviving light toward the red and brown end and changes which colours retain contrast. Algal turbidity does both and adds a daily oxygen cycle.
The transition zone where a coloured inflow meets clearer water is a genuine feature rather than an artefact: predators use the edge in the same way they use a current seam, sitting in the cover of the coloured side and taking prey that crosses.

How anglers adapt, and what is genuinely known
The consensus adaptations are consistent across disciplines: increase vibration and profile rather than relying on visual detail, slow presentation so a fish has time to locate it, use scent where the method allows it, and fish closer to features rather than searching open water.
Those are practitioner conclusions with a clear mechanistic rationale, which is a stronger position than most tackle folklore but is not the same as tested evidence.
The scientifically supported part is narrower: turbidity reduces visual range, alters which wavelengths persist, and shifts the balance of sensory advantage between species. Everything about which lure to use follows from that by inference, and FishingHQ keeps the two labelled separately.

Clear water is frequently hungry water
This record treats clarity as something that changes what fish can see and what an angler can get away with. There is a second reading of clarity that matters more when comparing one sea with another, and it points the other way.
TURBIDITY IN OPEN WATER IS MOSTLY PHYTOPLANKTON, and phytoplankton is the base of the food web. A green, murky, unattractive-looking sea is generally a productive one; a clear blue one is generally not. That is why the North Sea and the Atlantic shelf support the biomass they do and why the eastern Mediterranean, which is far more beautiful, supports far less.
SO CLARITY IS TWO DIFFERENT SIGNALS DEPENDING ON THE SCALE. Within one water on one day, a clearing after a colour-up is a change in what fish can see and how they can be approached — everything above applies. Between two waters, a difference in baseline clarity is frequently a difference in fertility, and the clear one has fewer and smaller fish.
AND SEDIMENT TURBIDITY IS A THIRD THING AGAIN. An estuary, a glacial river and a wind-stirred shallow lake are all turbid without being productive: the particles are mineral rather than living. Glacial rock flour in particular makes water opaque while carrying almost nothing edible, which is why a milky Icelandic or Alpine river fishes quite differently from a coloured lowland one that looks superficially similar.
WHAT AN ANGLER SHOULD TAKE FROM IT. Ask what is making the water the colour it is. Living particles mean food. Mineral particles mean reduced visibility and nothing else. And a sea that is permanently clear is telling you to fish lighter and expect less, which is a more useful adjustment than fishing harder.

Coloured water, and what it actually changes
"A bit of colour in the water" is the most-repeated condition preference in sea angling, and it is worth separating what is mechanically true from what is convention.
WHAT COLOURED WATER IS. Suspended sediment — sand, silt and organic material lifted off the bottom by wave action or delivered by run-off — scattering light. It is not the same thing as dirty water in the sense of pollution, and it is not the same as the brown of a river in spate, though both reduce visibility.
WHAT IS MECHANICALLY ESTABLISHED. Reduced visibility reduces the distance at which any visual predator can detect prey, and equally the distance at which prey and fish can detect line, hooks, leads and an angler standing on the skyline. That is optics rather than opinion. It also means sight-hunting species must work closer, and species that hunt by scent and by the lateral line are comparatively advantaged.
AND THE SEA THAT COLOURED THE WATER DID SOMETHING ELSE. Wave action that lifts sediment also dislodges worms, crabs, shellfish and their remains from the ground and moves them. So coloured water after a blow arrives with a meal attached, and separating the effect of reduced visibility from the effect of dislodged food is not possible from the bank.
WHAT ANGLERS RELIABLY REPORT. Better sport in coloured water for cod, bass and most bait fishing, and worse sport for clear-water sight fishing — mullet, wrasse, and lure fishing that depends on the fish seeing and following. Both are consistent and both fit the optics.
WHAT IS NOT ESTABLISHED. That specific bait or lure colours outperform others in coloured water. This is asserted constantly, tested very rarely, and the confidence with which it is stated exceeds anything behind it. What is defensible is contrast and vibration: something the fish can detect at all, and something that moves water.
TOO MUCH COLOUR IS A REAL LIMIT. Water thick with sand is not productive coloured water; it clogs gills, drives fish off the ground and fills every rig with weed. There is a middle, and local knowledge of what that looks like on a given beach is worth more than any general rule.
AND THE SEA THAT PRODUCES GOOD COLOUR IS THE SEA THAT IS DANGEROUS. The days after a big blow are the productive ones; the day of it is not, and the swell outlasts the wind. Check swell rather than wind.
