Before you spearfish — this comes first

  • Get proper instruction before you spearfish. A recognised freediving or spearfishing course teaches the things that actually kill people in this sport, and reading about them is not the same as being taught them.
  • Dive with a buddy, and dive one up, one down — one diver in the water, one on the surface watching them, every dive. A breath-hold blackout is silent and gives no warning; a watching buddy is the difference between an incident and a fatality.
  • Stay inside your own training and experience. Depth and breath-hold times are personal, they change day to day, and nobody else's numbers apply to you.
  • Understand the conditions before you enter the water: visibility, current, swell, tide, boat traffic and your exit. Conditions decide whether a dive is reasonable far more often than skill does.
  • Use equipment you have been shown how to use, check it before every session, and be visible — a marked float and line are how boat traffic knows you are there.
  • Never extend a dive for a fish. No catch is worth pushing a breath-hold, and the urge to take one more second is exactly what a blackout feels like from the inside — which is to say, like nothing at all.

Low-volume masks, and why volume matters

Air spent equalising the space inside a mask is air taken from a single breath, which is why freediving masks are built small — and why a scuba mask is the wrong tool even though it looks the same.

The air space in a mask compresses with depth and pulls the mask onto the face. Left unequalised, mask squeeze produces facial and conjunctival bruising and, in severe cases, injury to the eyes.

What reduces it: Equalise the mask by exhaling a little air through the nose during descent, use a low-volume mask so that costs less of the single breath available, and turn a dive rather than forcing past a mask or ear that will not equalise.

The reduced peripheral vision that low volume buys is a real cost: it is harder to see your own shooting line, float line and the structure beside you, which is exactly the information an entanglement is avoided with.

What reduces it: Keep lines short and tidy so there is less to see, know where the cutting tool is by feel rather than by sight, and turn the head deliberately to check rather than relying on peripheral awareness that the mask has removed.

Precautions that always apply here

  • Never spearfish or freedive alone.
  • Dive one up, one down: one diver down, one on the surface actively watching, every single dive.

Descending compresses the air inside a mask, and the difference in pressure pulls the mask onto the face — mask squeeze. The remedy is to exhale a little air through the nose into the mask.

On scuba that air is free: it comes from a tank. On a breath-hold dive it comes from the one breath the diver has, and every millilitre spent on the mask is a millilitre not available for anything else. That is the entire reason freediving masks exist as a category.

WHAT LOW VOLUME MEANS. Lenses close to the eyes, a small internal air space, and usually a soft skirt that sits close to the face. The trade is field of view, which is narrower than a large scuba mask offers.

WHAT ELSE MATTERS. Fit above everything: a mask that leaks is a constant distraction and a mask that seals badly will not hold the equalising air anyway. The nose pocket must be reachable so the nose can be pinched for ear equalisation. And the skirt colour — clear or black — changes internal reflections rather than performance, which is a genuine preference rather than a specification.

FOR SOME DIVERS A FLUID-GOGGLE or nose-clip arrangement removes the mask air space entirely, but that is specialist freediving equipment rather than spearfishing kit, because a spearfisher needs to see clearly and hunt rather than descend on a line.

Fogging, leaking and the two things that cause both

A new mask fogs because of a manufacturing residue on the lens, and no amount of spit or defogger fixes it until that residue is removed — traditionally with toothpaste or a dedicated cleaner, worked over the glass until it squeaks.

After that, fogging is condensation on a lens cooler than the air inside, and a wetting agent — saliva, baby shampoo, commercial defog — stops droplets forming.

Leaking has two causes and they need different fixes. Hair under the skirt is the commonest and is solved by clearing it. A skirt that does not match the face shape cannot be solved at all, which is why a mask is fitted by holding it to the face without the strap and inhaling gently through the nose: a mask that stays put has sealed, and one that falls off will leak all day.

A moustache is a genuine and much-mocked cause of leaks, and the honest answers are a smear of grease along the skirt line or a trim.

The mask is a gas budget, and it competes with your lungs

A freediving mask looks like a scuba mask and is solving a different problem, and the reason is worth understanding rather than accepting, because it explains a whole family of equipment choices at once.

THE AIR SPACE INSIDE A MASK COMPRESSES AS YOU DESCEND. Pressure rises with depth, the gas in the mask is squeezed, and the mask is pulled onto the face — the effect divers call mask squeeze. It has to be equalised by exhaling a little air through the nose into the mask.

AND ON A BREATH-HOLD DIVE, THAT AIR COMES OUT OF THE ONLY SUPPLY THERE IS. A scuba diver equalising a mask is spending gas from a cylinder. A freediver equalising a mask is spending gas from the single breath they took at the surface — the same breath that has to get them down, through the dive and back up. Every millilitre put into the mask is a millilitre not available to the lungs, and the cost rises with depth because each equalisation at greater pressure takes more gas.

WHICH IS WHY LOW VOLUME IS THE DESIGN GOAL. A smaller internal air space needs less gas to equalise, at every depth, on every dive. That is the entire argument and it is a physiological one rather than a preference.

THE TRADE IS FIELD OF VIEW AND IT IS REAL. Bringing the lenses closer to the eyes and shrinking the internal volume reduces peripheral vision, and a spearfisher works by seeing movement at the edge of vision. So a mask is a compromise between gas cost and awareness, and where a diver sits on it depends on how deep they go rather than on what looks best.

AND IT INTERACTS WITH THE REST OF THE KIT MORE THAN IT APPEARS TO. A low-volume mask sits closer to the face, which changes how a snorkel fits and where it can be worn. Reduced peripheral vision changes how much of your own shooting line and float line you can see, which is an entanglement consideration rather than a comfort one. And a mask that has to be equalised repeatedly is one more task in a period when a diver should be doing as little as possible.

FOGGING AND LEAKING ARE THE SAME PROBLEM WEARING TWO HATS. New silicone carries a release film that holds condensation, which is why a new mask fogs until it is properly cleaned. Anything between the skirt and the skin — hair, a hood edge, a strap tab — breaks the seal and lets water in. Both are addressed before the dive rather than during it, because a diver dealing with a flooding mask at depth is a diver not managing their breath-hold.
