Monofilament, fluorocarbon and braid

Three materials with genuinely different stretch, density, abrasion behaviour and visibility, none of which is better than the others in general and each of which is clearly better for particular jobs.
Almost every fishing line in use is one of three materials, and their differences are physical rather than promotional.
MONOFILAMENT is a single extruded nylon strand. It stretches substantially, sits close to the density of water so it neither sinks fast nor floats, absorbs some water over time, is cheap, and degrades with ultraviolet exposure and age. It is forgiving of poor knots and of sudden loads.
FLUOROCARBON is a single strand of polyvinylidene fluoride. It is denser than water and sinks, stretches less than nylon under low load though more than braid, resists abrasion well, and does not absorb water. Its refractive index is closer to water's than nylon's, which is the basis of the claim that it is less visible.
BRAID is many fibres of ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene braided together. It has almost no stretch, is far thinner than either monofilament for a given breaking strain, floats, has no useful memory, and is highly visible in most water. It is also relatively poor against sharp abrasion and requires knots chosen for slippery, low-friction material.
The three are not competing versions of the same product. They are three sets of trade-offs, and the sensible question is which trade-off the method wants.
What each trade-off does downstream
Stretch is the property with the widest consequences. Monofilament's stretch cushions everything: it forgives a heavy-handed strike, it absorbs a lunge at the net, and it hides light bites at range because the line takes up the movement before the rod tip sees it. Braid's lack of stretch does the reverse — bite detection at distance and in deep water becomes dramatically better, and every mistake goes straight through to the hook hold.
Diameter follows from strength-to-weight. Braid at a given breaking strain is far thinner than nylon, which means less water resistance in a current, less bow in the line, more depth from the same weight and more distance from the same cast. In a strong tide that difference is the difference between holding bottom and not.
Density decides what the line does between rod and hook. Floating braid keeps a surface lure working on the surface; sinking fluorocarbon takes a leader down and holds it there. Neither behaviour is neutral.
Abrasion resistance is where the ranking inverts. Braid cut across a barnacled pile or a mussel bed fails suddenly and completely, which is why sea and snag fishing so often puts a length of a different material at the business end.
The visibility question, stated at the strength the evidence supports
Fluorocarbon's refractive index is genuinely closer to that of water than nylon's, so a fluorocarbon strand disturbs the light passing through it less. That much is physics, and it is why the material was adopted for leaders.
What does not follow from it is that fish see it less, or that using it results in more takes. A line in water is visible by several routes — shadow, surface disturbance, movement, and the way it deforms the background — and refractive index addresses only one of them. Nor is the material invisible: it is less visible under some lighting conditions than a comparable nylon.
Anglers report the difference mattering most in clear, still, bright water on cautious fish, and mattering little in coloured or moving water. That is a genuinely widespread and independently arrived-at pattern of practice, and FishingHQ records it as practice. Compatibility, care and the mistakes
Knots are not interchangeable between the materials. Braid is slippery and low-friction, and knots that rely on grip alone can draw through; the palomar and the uni are widely used on braid for that reason. Fluorocarbon is stiffer and less tolerant of tight crushing turns, and benefits from being lubricated and drawn down slowly. Monofilament is the most forgiving of the three and hides a great deal of poor knot technique.
Joining braid to a leader is its own problem, because a knot between a very thin, slippery line and a much thicker stiff one has to pass through rod rings. This is where leader knots and, in heavy work, wind-on connections earn their complexity.
Monofilament ages. Ultraviolet light and heat degrade nylon, and line left on a reel through several seasons of sun loses strength invisibly. Braid does not degrade the same way but abrades, fades and picks up grit, and it eventually needs reversing or replacing.
The commonest mistake is fishing braid straight through in an environment full of sharp structure, and the second is expecting fluorocarbon's abrasion resistance to substitute for a wire trace where teeth are the problem. Neither material solves a sharp-teeth problem.
Fresh water and salt water are different environments for line
Salt water is more abrasive by circumstance rather than chemistry: sand suspended in surf, barnacles on every hard surface, and rocks that are never far from where fish are. Sea rigs commonly carry a heavier rubbing leader at the terminal end for exactly this reason, and the leader is treated as consumable.
Salt also collects. Salt crystals left in a braid's weave act as an abrasive against rod rings, and salt left on a reel's line roller shortens the life of both. Rinsing is a line-care measure as much as a reel-care one.
