Fluorocarbon leaders

A dense, abrasion-resistant line whose refractive index is close to water's — used as a leader rather than as a main line.
Fluorocarbon is polyvinylidene fluoride, and it differs from nylon in three ways that matter. It is denser, so it sinks rather than floating. It is considerably more abrasion-resistant, which is why it survives contact with gravel, mussel beds and rough mouths. And its refractive index is closer to that of water than nylon's, so it bends light less and is genuinely less visible underwater.
That last point is frequently overstated. Fluorocarbon is less visible, not invisible, and the difference is a real optical property rather than a marketing claim — but how much it changes catch rates under real fishing conditions is much less clear, and FishingHQ does not assert what has not been shown.
It is used almost entirely as a leader: a length between the main line and the terminal tackle. Its stiffness and lower knot strength make it a poor main line, and its density is an advantage in a leader precisely because it takes the connection down and away from the surface.

What it does
Provides the final connection between a visible or vulnerable main line and the hook or lure. It resists abrasion from teeth, gravel, mussel beds and structure; it sinks, taking the connection down; and it is optically less conspicuous in water than nylon of the same diameter.
How to choose one
- Choose leader strength by what the fish and the ground demand, not by matching the main line — a leader is often heavier than the line behind it.
- Use a length that puts the connection knot away from the terminal tackle and, ideally, off the reel during the cast.
- For toothy species, fluorocarbon is a compromise and wire is the answer; heavy fluorocarbon reduces bite-offs, it does not prevent them.
- Knot choice matters more than with nylon: fluorocarbon is stiffer and knots must be seated carefully and wetted.
- Heavier fluorocarbon is very stiff, which affects how a lure or bait behaves — a leader too heavy for the presentation kills the action.
What the numbers mean
BREAKING STRAIN and DIAMETER as for nylon. Fluorocarbon is generally slightly weaker than nylon at the same diameter and considerably more abrasion-resistant, which is the trade being made. REFRACTIVE INDEX is the property behind the visibility claim: water is about 1.33, fluorocarbon around 1.42, nylon around 1.53 — so fluorocarbon does bend light less than nylon, and that is a measurable physical fact rather than a claim. What it means for catch rates in real conditions is a separate question and a much less settled one.
Care, and how it fails
Fluorocarbon does not degrade in sunlight the way nylon does and stores well. It fails at knots more often than nylon, because it is stiffer and less forgiving — a knot pulled up dry or too fast generates friction heat and weakens. Wet every knot. Check leaders for nicks after fishing rough ground and replace rather than hoping; abrasion resistance is a delay, not immunity. It is also considerably denser than water, so a discarded length sinks and persists — leader offcuts are a specific and avoidable litter problem.

The most oversold material in fishing, and the three jobs it actually does
Fluorocarbon is sold on one property and bought for it, and that property is the smallest of the four things it does. Separating them is worth more than any comparison of brands.
THE INVISIBILITY CLAIM IS REAL PHYSICS AND A SMALL EFFECT. Fluorocarbon's refractive index is closer to water's than nylon's, so light bends less as it passes the line and it is genuinely less visible. That is true. What it is not is invisible, and it is not the difference between catching and not catching in most situations. A heavy leader, a clumsy approach, a dragging bait or the wrong depth will each cost far more fish than line visibility ever does, and an angler who buys fluorocarbon to solve a problem caused by any of those has misdiagnosed it — expensively, since the material costs several times what nylon does.
ABRASION RESISTANCE IS THE PROPERTY WORTH PAYING FOR. Fluorocarbon is harder than nylon and stands up better to rock, gravel, shell, gill covers and teeth. That is why it earns its place as a leader over rough ground and in front of anything with an abrasive mouth, and it is a measurable, useful and mostly unmarketed advantage.
STIFFNESS AND DENSITY ARE THE TWO THAT DECIDE PRESENTATION. It is denser than water and sinks, which suits a leader taking a bait or lure down and actively works against a floating presentation. It is stiffer than nylon, which helps a rig stand away from a body line and hurts a fine hooklength's movement — and which makes it slipperier and less forgiving in knots, so a knot that seats perfectly in nylon can fail in fluorocarbon.
AND IT DOES NOT STRETCH MUCH, which is a third-order property with a real consequence: less shock absorption than nylon, so a lunging fish loads the hook hold and the knot harder.
WHERE IT IS THE WRONG ANSWER OUTRIGHT. In front of a pike or anything else that can shear line, where wire is the requirement and heavy fluorocarbon is a compromise that fails eventually — and a fish that swims off with a severed trace has been condemned rather than lost. On a surface presentation, where it sinks the bait. And as a mainline for anybody who has not accounted for its lower stretch and its knot behaviour.
THE SUMMARY WORTH REMEMBERING. Buy it for abrasion, use it where things sink, tie it carefully and wet, and do not expect it to make you invisible.
