Why knots slip or break

A knot fails in one of three distinguishable ways, and the way it failed is written into what is left on the line — which makes knot failure one of the few angling problems that can be diagnosed after the fact.
Every knot weakens the line it is tied in, because a knot works by making the line grip itself and gripping means bending, crushing and loading some fibres more than others. The question is never whether a knot weakens the line but by how much and in what manner it lets go.
There are three failure modes and they leave different evidence.
SLIPPAGE. The knot pulls through itself and the line comes back with a smooth, sometimes slightly melted end and no curl. This is a knot with too few turns for the material, or one tied in a slick line — fluorocarbon and braid both slip in knots that hold perfectly in nylon.
BREAKAGE AT THE KNOT. The line comes back with a tight curl or pigtail at the end. That curl is the shape of the knot at the moment it parted, and it means the knot itself was the weak point: it was overtightened, tightened dry, or it concentrated load on a sharp internal bend.
BREAKAGE AWAY FROM THE KNOT. The line parts somewhere along its length with a clean or frayed end and no curl. The knot was not the problem; abrasion, a nick, UV degradation or a shock load was.
That diagnostic — look for the curl — is the single most useful thing on this page, because it separates 'tie a better knot' from 'check your line' and those are entirely different remedies.
Why lubrication and tightening speed matter more than they sound
Tightening a knot dry generates friction heat between the surfaces sliding past one another, and monofilament and fluorocarbon are thermoplastics whose properties change with temperature. A knot pulled up fast and dry can be locally weakened before it has ever seen a fish.
Wetting the knot before seating it reduces that friction, and pulling it up smoothly rather than snatching it lets the turns bed evenly instead of one turn taking the whole load. The effect is not marginal: it is one of the few pieces of technique where the mechanism is straightforwardly material science.
Overtightening is the mirror problem. A knot crushed beyond the point where the turns have seated does not become more secure — it deforms the line inside the knot, and the deformation is where it will part.
Material decides which knots work, and this is where most failures start
Nylon monofilament stretches, grips itself readily and is forgiving of knot choice. Fluorocarbon is stiffer, harder-surfaced and considerably more slippery, so knots with too few turns creep under sustained load. Braid has almost no stretch and a very low surface friction, and knots that rely on friction alone — rather than on the line passing through a loop and locking — routinely slip in it.
The practical rule is that a knot is not a general-purpose object. A clinch that holds indefinitely in nylon is a poor choice in braid; a knot designed for braid frequently needs more turns than feels reasonable in nylon.
Joining two different materials is the hardest case, because the two lines behave differently under the same load, and it is the join that fails when a leader is attached badly rather than the knot at the hook.

Wetting knots, seating them slowly, matching the knot to the material, and testing a knot by hand before fishing it are practices that appear consistently across coarse, sea and game traditions and in the record-claim procedures used competitively.
Comparative knot strength figures circulate widely and should be treated with more caution than they usually are. Published percentages come from a variety of test protocols — different pull rates, different line samples, different definitions of failure — and are not reliably comparable with one another. The direction of the findings is consistent; the precise numbers are not, and FishingHQ does not publish a league table it cannot source properly.
