Dropper loop

A loop that stands out at right angles from the middle of a line, holding a hook or fly clear of it. It is the structural knot: a sea trace, a paternoster and a team of wet flies are all built from a row of them.
EVERY OTHER KNOT IN THIS CATALOGUE JOINS SOMETHING TO SOMETHING. THIS ONE BUILDS A STRUCTURE, AND THAT IS WHY IT BEHAVES DIFFERENTLY.
A dropper loop is tied in the MIDDLE of an unbroken line. The line goes in one end and out the other, unbroken and undiminished, and a loop is pushed out sideways from a barrel of turns in the middle. Everything hangs off that loop: a hook length, a fly, a bait, a lead.
THE POINT IS THE ANGLE. A hook attached anywhere along a line simply lies against it and tangles round it on every cast and every retrieve. A dropper loop stands proud of the body line, and a hook on it fishes out to the side where a fish can find it. That single geometric property is what makes multi-hook fishing work at all.
WHAT IT IS USED TO BUILD, ACROSS THREE DISCIPLINES THAT DO NOT OTHERWISE SHARE MUCH.
A SEA TRACE. Two or three dropper loops down a length of heavier line, a hook snood on each, a lead at the bottom. This is the standard shore and boat arrangement over clean ground and it is a row of these knots and nothing else.
A PATERNOSTER. The same idea with the bait held off the bottom — the loop standing off the body line is what keeps a bait visible over soft or weedy ground rather than sunk into it.
A TEAM OF WET FLIES. Two or three flies down a leader, the point fly at the end and the droppers above it, each on a short length off a loop. Stillwater and river wet-fly fishing are organised around this and it is the same knot.
THE TURN COUNT DECIDES WHICH WAY THE LOOP FACES, and this is the part that is genuinely fiddly. The loop is pushed out through the gap in the middle of a barrel of turns, and the barrel has to be even on both sides for the loop to sit square. Uneven, and the loop lies back along the line — which is the whole failure this knot exists to prevent.
AND A DROPPER IS A TANGLE SOURCE BY CONSTRUCTION. It stands out from the line, which is the point, and anything standing out from a line in the air will find the line. Short droppers tangle less than long ones, stiffer material tangles less than limp, and a dropper longer than the gap to the next one will find its neighbour every time.

How to tie it
These written steps are the instruction. The diagram supports them.
- Form a large loose loop in the line at the point where the dropper is wanted, holding the crossing point between finger and thumb.
- Twist the loop over on itself five or six times, so a barrel of turns builds up with an open gap remaining at the centre.
- Pinch that centre gap open and push the far side of the original loop through it, from the front to the back.
- Hold the pushed-through loop so it cannot pull back out — a finger through it is the usual method, and the reason this knot is tied sitting down the first few times.
- Wet the whole barrel thoroughly.
- Draw it up by pulling both standing lines away from each other steadily, so the turns on each side bed down evenly and the loop is forced out square to the line.
- Check the loop stands at right angles rather than lying back along the line, and that the barrel is symmetrical on both sides of it.
Finishing it properly
- Wet the whole barrel before drawing up. There are a lot of turns bedding at once and they generate heat.
- Pull both standing lines apart evenly — pulling one hard and one gently is what makes the loop lie back.
- Keep droppers shorter than the gap to the next one, or they will find each other on the cast.
- Tie all the droppers on a trace before attaching anything to them, and check each stands square before you commit hooks to it.
How it fails
It fails in two ways and they are quite different. The loop LIES BACK along the body line instead of standing out — which is a tying fault, caused by the turns bedding unevenly on either side, and it makes the dropper tangle continuously without ever breaking. Or the barrel is drawn up with the loop half pulled back through, in which case the knot looks right and the loop pulls out entirely under load, dropping whatever was on it. Inspect by holding the line straight and looking at the loop side-on: it should stand square, and the turns should be even in number and tension on both sides of it.
Why droppers tangle, and the three measurements that stop it
A dropper stands out from the line, which is the whole point, and anything standing out from a line in the air will find that line. Tangling is not a sign the knot was tied badly; it is the arrangement's built-in cost, and it is managed by three measurements rather than by care.
DROPPER LENGTH AGAINST DROPPER SPACING. A dropper longer than the gap to the next one will reach its neighbour, and it will do so on every cast until it is shortened. This is the single measurement that decides whether a trace fishes or spends the session in a ball. Keep each dropper clearly shorter than the distance to the one above it.
MATERIAL STIFFNESS. A limp dropper folds back along the body line in the air; a stiffer one stands out and stays out. This is why sea traces are built from heavier, stiffer nylon than the fishing strictly requires, and why the wet-fly equivalent uses a leader with some backbone rather than the softest available. Stiffness is doing a mechanical job here, not a strength one.
WHETHER THE LOOP STANDS SQUARE. This is the knot itself, and it is the one that gets blamed last. A dropper loop whose barrel bedded unevenly lies back along the body line, so the hook length starts every cast already parallel to the line it is supposed to stand clear of. Hold the trace straight and look at each loop side-on before you commit hooks to it.
AND TWO HABITS THAT MATTER MORE THAN ANY OF THEM. Cast smoothly rather than hard — a trace tangles in the air, during the acceleration, not in the water. And retrieve the last few metres steadily rather than swinging the trace in, because a trace lifted out of the water and swung is a trace that wraps itself round the line on the way.
THE ARITHMETIC IS WORTH DOING ONCE. Three droppers on a metre of body line means gaps of about 30 cm, which caps dropper length at roughly 20 cm and hook lengths accordingly. Anglers who find traces tangle constantly are usually fishing droppers twice that length.
