Loop knots, and when a loose connection helps

A loop knot deliberately leaves the lure or hook free to move at the eye. Where a lure's action depends on it being able to swing, a tight knot damps exactly the movement the lure was designed to produce.
MOST KNOTS ARE DESIGNED TO DRAW TIGHT ONTO THE EYE. A LOOP KNOT DELIBERATELY DOES NOT.
It finishes as a fixed loop of line passing through the eye, so the terminal object hangs in the loop and can pivot freely. The loop does not open or close under load — that is the difference between a loop knot and a slip knot, and it matters, because a loop that closes under load becomes a tight connection at the worst moment.
WHERE IT EARNS ITS PLACE.
ON LURES WHOSE ACTION IS A SWING. A jerkbait darting side to side, a small plug wobbling, a jig head fished with a lift-and-drop: all of these move by pivoting about the eye. A tight knot restrains that pivot, and on light lures with subtle actions the effect is visible in the water. The lighter the lure and the finer the action, the more the knot matters.
WITH HEAVY OR STIFF LEADERS. A thick, stiff leader tied tight to a small lure effectively splints it. A loop restores the movement the leader took away, which is why the combination of a heavy leader and a loop knot is standard in saltwater lure and fly fishing.
ON FLIES THAT NEED TO HANG OR SWIM FREE, particularly larger streamer patterns fished on a stiff tippet.
WHERE IT IS THE WRONG CHOICE.
ON BAIT HOOKS, where the direction of pull needs to be predictable so the point turns into the fish rather than sliding.
WHERE THE LOOP CAN CATCH. A loop is a place for weed, for a treble hook to hook back into, and for a hooklength to tangle round. In weedy water and on rigs with multiple hooks it creates problems.
WHERE THE FISH HAS TEETH. A loop presents more line surface at the eye, exactly where teeth are.
THE CONSTRUCTION REQUIREMENT is that the loop must not slip. A knot that tightens down onto the eye under pressure is not doing the job, and several commonly recommended loops do exactly that. The knots that hold their loop do so by locking the loop's size with a turn that jams — the double overhand loop is the plainest instance, and the platform's knot records state which behave this way in which material.
AND KEEP THE LOOP SMALL. A loop of a few millimetres gives the lure everything it needs. A large loop adds nothing and catches everything.
Three different jobs a loop does, and why they do not substitute
A loop is used for at least three quite different reasons across the disciplines this catalogue covers, and an angler who has learned one use is frequently surprised by another.
A LOOP AT THE LURE OR FLY IS ABOUT MOVEMENT. A knot drawn tight to the eye fixes the angle between line and lure; a loop lets the lure swing freely, which restores an action that a tight connection kills. This matters most with light lures, single flies and small jigs, and least with anything whose action comes from a diving lip. It is a presentation decision.
A LOOP AT THE HOOKLENGTH IS ABOUT CHANGING IT QUICKLY. A made-up hooklength with a loop at one end joins to a loop on the mainline in seconds, with cold hands, in the dark, without retying anything. That is what makes a session of broken fine line survivable, and it is why British coarse and match fishing is organised around it. It is a logistics decision.
A LOOP STANDING OUT FROM A BODY LINE IS A DROPPER, and it is a structural decision. A dropper loop holds a hook or a fly away from the main line so that it fishes clear rather than tangling round it — which is how a multi-hook sea trace, a team of wet flies and a paternoster are all built. Six loops in a body line is a trace.
THEY DO NOT SUBSTITUTE FOR ONE ANOTHER. A loop tied for movement at the lure is too small to join to; a loop-to-loop join is too bulky to swing a small fly; a dropper standing out from the line is not a connection at all.
AND THE ONE THING THEY SHARE IS THE FAILURE MODE. A loop is a doubled section of line, and it fails where the doubling ends — at the knot that forms it. A loop knot drawn up dry or seated crooked fails there under a fraction of the line's strength, and because a loop looks like a loop whether or not it is properly formed, it is one of the connections least often inspected and most worth inspecting.
