What lure action means

Action is the pattern of movement a lure makes when water flows past it, produced by shape and mass distribution, and it is the property that separates a lure from a piece of metal on a hook.

"Action" is the word for how a lure behaves when it is moving through water, and it covers several distinct movements that are usually lumped together.

There is the SIDE-TO-SIDE WOBBLE of a crankbait or spoon, produced by an unstable shape being pushed through water — a lip, a curve or an offset presents a face at an angle to the flow, the lure is pushed off line, the flow then acts on the opposite face, and it oscillates.

There is ROTATION, where a lure spins on its own axis, as a spinner blade does around its shaft.

There is the TAIL BEAT of a soft plastic or swimbait, where a flexible section trails and flexes at a rate set by its stiffness and the speed of the water.

And there is the FALL — how a lure behaves when it is not being pulled at all, which for jigs and many soft plastics is where most of the fishing happens.

What these have in common is that they are set by geometry and mass, not by a setting. A lure's action is largely fixed at the moulding stage, and the angler's control over it is limited to speed, rod angle, line choice and how the lure is rigged.

The descriptive vocabulary — tight, wide, rolling, thumping — has no measurement behind it. It is a set of shared impressions that anglers use to communicate, and it works well enough between people who have handled the same lures and poorly between people who have not.

What changes an action, and what does not

Speed changes amplitude and frequency together. Most lures have a range within which they behave as designed, below which they barely move and above which they blow out — rise to the surface, roll onto their side, or spin. Finding the top of that range and working just under it is a standard approach with hard lures.

Line choice changes action more than people expect. A thick line has more drag and pulls a diving lure shallower and damps its movement; a low-stretch line transmits rod movement directly where a stretchy one smooths it out. The same lure on braid and on heavy nylon is not the same lure.

Attachment changes it. A stiff clip on a small lure's nose ring restricts the pivot the design depends on, and a loop knot restores it. This is the single most common accidental modification.

What does NOT change action is anything cosmetic. Colour, pattern and finish are irrelevant to how the lure moves, which is worth stating plainly because they are the properties most heavily marketed.

Why action is thought to matter, at the strength that is supportable

The mechanism connecting action to feeding response is genuinely established at one end: fish detect water movement through the lateral line, and a moving object generates a flow field that can be sensed at close range independent of light. That much is physiology.

What is not established is the step anglers routinely make from there — that a particular action is preferred, that a wider wobble suits coloured water, or that a tighter action suits cold.
