How a jerkbait's action is produced

A jerkbait does not swim; it is thrown sideways by a sharp pull and then coasts, and the slack line between pulls is what lets it do so.

A jerkbait is a lure with little or no self-generated action, which is the opposite of a crankbait. Its movement comes almost entirely from the rod.

The sequence is: a sharp downward or sideways pull of the rod tip accelerates the lure; the lure's shape and mass distribution turn that acceleration into a sideways dart rather than a straight advance; the pull stops; and the lure coasts, decelerating, until it stops. Then the angler recovers the slack created by the dart and does it again.

The slack is the mechanism, not a side effect. A jerkbait pulled on a tight line is dragged forwards and cannot turn, because the line is still restraining the nose. A jerkbait pulled and then given slack pivots freely on the water resistance against its own body and turns hard — which is why the retrieve is described in terms of the pause as much as the pull.

The difference between a hard jerkbait, a soft one and a glide bait is in what happens during the coast. A hard jerkbait with a small lip darts and rolls; a soft jerkbait is slower and more erratic and often falls during the pause; a glide bait converts each pull into a long, wide arc in alternating directions, which is why it is fished with slower, more deliberate strokes.

On the surface the same principle produces the walk-the-dog action: rhythmic slack-line taps, each one throwing the nose to alternate sides.

What the tackle has to do for it to work

The retrieve depends on the rod being able to move the lure decisively and then release it, so a rod with enough tip speed and a line that transmits the pull are both part of the system.

Low-stretch line makes the dart sharper because more of the rod's movement reaches the lure; heavy stretchy line rounds it off. Anglers who move from nylon to braid on jerkbaits usually find they must pull less hard, not more.

Rod angle decides how the slack behaves. A rod held low keeps the line close to the water and the slack manageable; a high rod produces slack that hangs in the air and takes longer to recover, which slows the cadence and makes takes on the pause harder to detect.

Attachment matters here more than on most lures. A rigid clip on the nose ring restrains exactly the pivot the action depends on, and a loop knot or a rounded ring restores it.

Cadence, and the part that is convention

The variables anglers manipulate are the strength of the pull, the number of pulls before a pause, and the length of the pause. The reasoning they give is that a pause presents a stationary target to a following fish and that varying the cadence prevents a fish from settling into a following pattern without committing.

The underlying observation — that fish frequently take on the pause rather than on the movement — is reported so widely, and across such different fisheries, that it is a strong piece of practitioner knowledge. It is still practitioner knowledge, and no amount of repetition converts it into a measured effect.
