A body with a diving lip that pulls it down and gives it a wobbling action — the lure family that fishes a specific, repeatable depth.
A crankbait is a solid or hollow body with a lip — a projecting vane — at the front. The lip catches water as the lure is pulled forward, forcing the body downward and simultaneously making it roll from side to side. Everything about how the lure behaves comes from the lip's size and angle.
The practical value of that is depth control. A crankbait dives to roughly a defined depth and then stays there for the rest of the retrieve, which means an angler can fish a chosen band of water repeatedly and reliably. Almost no other lure does this — a spoon's depth depends on retrieve speed, a spinner's on lift, and a soft plastic's on the countdown.
Crankbaits also come as floating, suspending and sinking versions, and the difference matters. A floater rises on the pause; a suspender hangs motionless; a sinker keeps dropping. Which one to use is a question about how the fish are behaving on the pause rather than during the retrieve.

What it does in the water
A rolling, side-to-side wobble generated by the lip deflecting water, combined with a downward pull. A larger lip set at a shallower angle to the body produces more dive and a wider wobble; a small, steeply-angled lip produces a shallow runner with a tighter action. Some designs also rattle, adding an acoustic signal.
How it is worked
A steady retrieve brings the lure to its running depth and holds it there. The productive variations are pauses — where floating, suspending and sinking versions each behave differently — and deliberate contact with the bottom or with structure, where a lure that bumps a rock and deflects sideways produces a very high proportion of takes. That deflection is not an accident of the retrieve; it is the technique.
What it imitates
A crankbait imitates a small fish more directly than most lures: it has a body, a profile and a swimming action, and it runs at a fixed depth as a real fish would. The rolling action reproduces the flash of a fish turning, and a lure deflecting off structure reproduces the panic of one that has just discovered a predator.
Where it stops working
- Depth is fixed by design — a deep diver cannot be fished shallow and a shallow runner cannot be forced down.
- Buoyant bodies and multiple trebles make them expensive to lose in snags, and they snag readily.
- Line diameter changes running depth measurably; thick line reduces it.
- Bulky in wind, and heavy models require a rod rated for them.
- The action is fixed, so there is less scope for the angler to change what the lure does.
