The commonest knot anybody ties, and the one where the difference between a fixed connection and a loose one changes how the object at the other end behaves.
ATTACHING LINE TO AN EYE IS ONE JOB WITH TWO ANSWERS, and choosing between them is a decision about movement rather than about strength.
A TIGHT CONNECTION draws the line down onto the eye so the hook or lure is held in a fixed relationship to the line. This is what you want for a hook, where the pull needs to arrive at the point in a predictable direction, and for any bait presentation where the terminal object should not swing.
A LOOP CONNECTION leaves the eye free to move within a loop of line. The lure hangs and swings on its own, which restores an action that a tight knot damps. That is a separate record because the reasoning is separate.
WHAT DECIDES WHETHER THE KNOT HOLDS.
THE NUMBER OF TURNS, matched to the material and the diameter. Fine line needs more turns than heavy line in the same knot; braid needs more than nylon.
WHETHER THE LINE PASSES THROUGH THE EYE ONCE OR TWICE. Doubling through the eye distributes the load across two strands and cushions the line against the eye's edge, which is the reason the palomar behaves as well as it does in braid.
WHETHER THE EYE IS SMOOTH. A cheap hook with a poorly closed eye, or a lure ring with a burr, will cut a knot that is otherwise perfect. Running a fingernail round an eye takes a second and finds most of these.
WHICH DIRECTION THE PULL ARRIVES FROM. On a hook with a turned eye, the knot should sit so the pull is in line with the point rather than dragging it sideways. This is why the standing part is often passed back through the eye or under the shank in traditional patterns.
THE FAILURE SIGNATURE TELLS YOU WHICH FAULT YOU HAVE. A curled, pig-tailed tag end means the knot SLIPPED. A clean straight cut means the line was CUT — by the eye, by a tooth, or by structure. A break with a slight stretch and a frayed end means the line failed under load, and the knot was not the problem at all.
AND THE SWIVEL DESERVES A NOTE. A swivel is a bearing, not a connector: it exists to stop line twist reaching the main line. Tying to a swivel that does not actually rotate under load — many cheap ones do not — puts the twist straight back into the line and produces the exact problem the swivel was bought to prevent.
The eye is part of the knot, and not all eyes are the same
A knot to a hook, swivel or lure is a knot to a specific piece of metal, and the metal contributes as much to the result as the sequence does.
A ROUGH OR DAMAGED EYE CUTS LINE. Cheap hooks and old swivels can carry a burr, a casting seam or a rough weld where the eye closes, and line drawn across it under load parts there. This is invisible without looking and easy to check: run the line through the eye and feel for a catch, or draw a fingernail round the inside of it.
AN EYE THAT IS NOT CLOSED IS WORSE. Many hook eyes are formed rather than welded, leaving a gap where the wire meets. Fine line can work into that gap and jam or be cut, which is why some patterns are unsuitable for very light hooklengths whatever the knot.
EYE SIZE DECIDES WHETHER A DOUBLED KNOT IS POSSIBLE AT ALL. A Palomar needs the doubled bight to pass through, and a fine-wire hook with a small eye in heavy line will not take it. That is a compatibility question rather than a preference, and it is the commonest reason a knot that works everywhere fails on one particular hook.
WHICH WAY THE EYE TURNS CHANGES THE PRESENTATION. Up-turned and down-turned eyes angle the hook relative to the line and are chosen deliberately for particular arrangements; a knot that slides round to the wrong side of the eye undoes that choice.
AND A LURE WITH SEVERAL TREBLES IS A DIFFERENT PROBLEM FROM A HOOK. Any knot requiring a loop to pass over the whole object is impractical, which is exactly the Palomar's stated limitation, and this is where a knot tied around the eye rather than over the lure earns its place.
THE TEST THAT COVERS ALL OF IT. After tying, hold the hook or lure and pull steadily on the standing line while watching the knot. It should seat square against the eye and stay there. If it slides round the eye, sits crooked, or the eye rotates in the knot, undo it.
