The classic monofilament knot for attaching a hook or swivel — quick, familiar, and specifically unreliable in braid.

The improved clinch is the knot most anglers learn first, and for good reason: it is quick, it can be tied one-handed with practice, and in monofilament it is strong enough for almost anything.

The word 'improved' refers to one specific extra step. The plain clinch passes the tag end back through the small loop by the eye and stops; the improved version then tucks it through the large loop it has just created. That single tuck is what stops the knot slipping under sustained load, and it is the step people leave out.

In braid it should be avoided. Braid is slick and does not bed into itself the way nylon does, and a clinch knot in braid will pull through under load without giving any warning that it is about to. This is one of the most common causes of lost fish among anglers who have switched line type without switching knots.

How to tie it

  1. Pass the tag end through the hook or swivel eye, leaving about 15 cm.
  2. Twist the tag end around the standing line five or six times — fewer for heavy line, more for fine.
  3. Pass the tag end back through the small loop that sits immediately beside the eye.
  4. Then pass the tag end through the large loop you have just created. This tuck is the 'improved' part, and omitting it is why plain clinch knots slip.
  5. Wet the knot thoroughly.
  6. Draw it up smoothly by pulling the standing line, letting the turns roll down and seat neatly against the eye.
  7. Check the turns lie in a tidy spiral without crossing, then trim the tag end.

How this drawing was produced

Redrawn in Sprint 54. The previous figure drew the five turns as five disconnected diagonal dashes lying across the standing line, and its fourth stage marker was clipped off the bottom of the canvas. Turns are now one continuous woven path generated by `weave()`, so the turn count and the declared crossings are derived from the same number.

Finishing it properly

  • Wet it before drawing up; a dry clinch in fine line is measurably weaker.
  • Use more turns in fine line and fewer in heavy — five or six is a reasonable general answer, four in very heavy mono.
  • Draw up slowly and watch the turns roll down; if they cross, cut it off and start again.

How it fails

The improved clinch fails by the turns pulling through one another, which happens for two reasons. In slippery lines — braid especially, and heavy stiff fluorocarbon to a lesser extent — the turns will not bed into each other and the knot slides. And in any line, too few turns for the diameter, or turns that crossed over each other as the knot was drawn up, leaves a knot that holds until it does not. A failed clinch typically leaves a curly pigtail on the tag end, which is a reliable diagnostic that the knot slipped rather than the line breaking.

Whether it holds in braid: the authorities disagree

FishingHQ says do not tie this knot in braid, and that is not unanimous.

THE DISAGREEMENT IS REAL AND IT IS BETWEEN PUBLIC BODIES. Utah's wildlife agency states plainly that the improved clinch "works well for all types of fishing line — monofilament, fluorocarbon and braided line". Vermont's fish and wildlife department states the opposite: that it is "not generally recommended for use with braided lines" and is a choice for monofilament or fluorocarbon. Both are state fisheries agencies, both are teaching beginners, and they contradict each other on a point of fact.

WHY THIS RECORD FOLLOWS VERMONT. The mechanism is not in dispute even though the conclusion is: a clinch holds because its turns bed into one another under load, and braid is both thinner for its strength and far slipperier than nylon, so the turns bed less and can roll. The angling literature this record already cites reaches the same conclusion, and the failure is a quiet one — the knot holds while you are tying and rigging and lets go on the fish. Where a knot can fail silently, the cautious reading is the right one.

WHAT TO DO WITH THAT. If you fish braid, use a Palomar, which every source here agrees is a braid knot, or a uni with six to eight turns rather than five. If you have used improved clinches in braid for years without trouble, you are not doing something unheard of — you are on the permissive side of a genuine split, and the cost of moving to a Palomar is about four seconds.

This section exists because the alternative was to present a contested point as settled. A reader who later finds a government page saying the opposite is entitled to have been told it was there.

A knot with a narrow but genuine range, and the line it must never be used on

The improved clinch is the knot most anglers learn first and the one most often used outside the conditions it works in, so its selection question is mostly about when to stop using it.

WHERE IT IS RIGHT. Monofilament and fluorocarbon of light to moderate diameter, tied to a hook, swivel or lure eye. In that range it is quick, compact, neat, easy to tie by feel in poor light, and entirely adequate. There is nothing wrong with it and generations of fish have been landed on it.

WHERE IT IS WRONG, AND THIS IS THE PART THAT MATTERS. The knot's security comes from friction between wraps as they roll down against the eye, and anything that reduces that friction defeats it.

BRAID DEFEATS IT COMPLETELY. Braided line is slippery and limp, the wraps slide over one another rather than locking, and the knot pulls through. The record's own `avoidIn` field says so, and it is not a marginal caution — this is the single commonest knot failure in modern angling, and it happens to people who have used the knot successfully for years on monofilament and assume it transfers. It does not. On braid, use a Palomar or a uni.

HEAVY AND STIFF MONOFILAMENT DEFEATS IT TOO, for a related reason: thick, stiff line will not bed the wraps down neatly, they cross, and the load falls on one turn instead of being distributed. Above a certain diameter the knot becomes unreliable and a uni with fewer turns is the better selection.

AND THE TUCK IS NOT OPTIONAL. The 'improved' part is the final pass of the tag end through the large loop, and a plain clinch without it slips. Anybody whose clinch knots fail on monofilament should check they are tying the improved version before changing knot.

SO THE HONEST SELECTION ADVICE is that the improved clinch is a good light-monofilament knot with a real range, that the range does not include braid at all, and that an angler who fishes both materials is better served by learning a uni and using it for everything than by remembering which knot goes with which spool.
