Not a knot at all, and recorded as one because it is what terminates single-strand wire. Wire kinks where nylon would bed, so it is twisted rather than tied — and a kink is a break waiting to happen.
Safety
Hooks and barbs — Can cause injury needing treatment
A wire tag trimmed with cutters leaves a stiff needle-sharp spur at exactly the point the trace is handled — beside the hook, on a fish with teeth, frequently in poor light. It penetrates skin readily and catches in nets, clothing and unhooking mats.
What reduces it: Break the tag off by fatiguing it with a bent handle so the end is blunt, run a finger over every finished termination to confirm it, and handle traces by the swivel rather than by the wire.
Worse when:
- Unhooking a live pike or other toothy fish at the water's edge
- Darkness, cold hands and hurry
- Shop-bought or hurriedly made traces whose terminations have not been checked
WIRE DOES NOT KNOT, AND THIS RECORD EXISTS BECAUSE THE CATALOGUE HELD A WIRE TRACE AND NOTHING THAT COULD FINISH ONE.
`choosing-a-knot-for-the-line-you-are-using` states the principle: wire does not knot in the ordinary sense, and using a nylon knot in wire produces a joint that kinks and fails at the kink. That is correct and it left an obvious question unanswered — what does terminate a wire trace. For single-strand wire the answer is the haywire twist, and it is a mechanical termination rather than a knot. It is filed as a knot record because that is the connection the reader is looking for, and calling it something else to be technically accurate would hide it.
WHY WIRE BEHAVES DIFFERENTLY. Nylon and braid hold by friction and deformation: the material squeezes against itself and grips. Single-strand wire does neither. It is stiff, it has a memory, and once bent past a certain radius it takes a permanent set. A tight radius is a KINK, the metal is work-hardened there, and it will fatigue and snap at that exact point — often after several apparently successful fish.
SO THE TWIST HAS TWO DISTINCT PARTS AND THEY DO DIFFERENT JOBS. First, several turns where the two wire strands wrap around EACH OTHER symmetrically, like the strands of a rope — this is the part that holds, and both strands must turn about the common axis. Then several tight barrel wraps of the tag around the standing wire alone, which locks the twist and stops it unwinding.
THE COMMONEST ERROR IS THAT THE FIRST PART IS NOT A TWIST AT ALL. If one wire stays straight and the other wraps around it, nothing is holding: the straight one simply pulls out of the coil. A correct haywire looks like a short length of two-strand rope. This is inspectable at a glance and it is worth doing every time.
AND THE TAG IS BROKEN OFF RATHER THAN CUT. A wire tag cut with pliers leaves a needle-sharp spur that will go through a finger, catch a net, and find the angler's hand every time the trace is handled. The convention is to bend the tag into a small handle and work it back and forth until the metal fatigues and parts, which leaves a blunt end. This is a safety instruction and not a refinement.
WIRE IS ALSO A WELFARE REQUIREMENT RATHER THAN A PREFERENCE, wherever a fish with teeth can reach the line. A pike that bites through nylon swims away with hooks in it. That is the reason the wire-trace arrangement exists, and it is the reason a termination that fails quietly matters more here than almost anywhere else.
AND NOTE THE LIMIT OF THIS RECORD. Multi-strand and nylon-coated wires are different materials that behave differently — many are crimped, and some of the coated ones genuinely can be knotted. This is single-strand practice, and the trace's own packaging is the authority on which material is in your hand.

How to tie it
These written steps are the instruction. The diagram supports them.
- Pass the wire through the hook or swivel eye and bend the tag back alongside the standing wire, leaving about 8 cm and keeping the bend at the eye as open a curve as the eye allows.
- Hold both strands and twist them around EACH OTHER, symmetrically, so both turn about a common axis. Four or five turns. If one strand stays straight while the other wraps it, start again — that is the failure this knot is defined by.
- Now bring the tag to right angles and make five or six tight barrel wraps of the tag alone around the standing wire, hard up against the twisted section.
- Bend the last centimetre of the tag out into a small crank handle.
- Work that handle back and forth until the metal fatigues and the tag parts on its own. Do not cut it — a cut wire tag leaves a needle-sharp spur.
- Run a finger and thumb over the finished termination to confirm the end is blunt, then inspect the twisted section for symmetry and the standing wire for kinks.
Finishing it properly
- Break the tag off with a bent handle rather than cutting it. A cut wire spur is the commonest injury this connection causes.
- Inspect the twisted section for symmetry every time — two strands turning about each other, not one wrapped round a straight one.
- Discard any trace with a kink. Wire does not recover from being straightened and the kink is where it will break.
- Check traces before every session rather than after a fish, because wire fatigue accumulates invisibly and the failure is sudden.
How it fails
It fails at a kink, and the kink is usually made when the trace is tied rather than when it is fished. Single-strand wire that has been bent tight is work-hardened at the bend, and it snaps there under load after several apparently sound fish — the break is clean and square, with a visible sharp bend just beside it. The second failure is an asymmetric twist, where one wire ran straight through a coil made by the other and simply pulls out. Both are inspectable: the twisted section must look like two-strand rope, and the standing wire must run in smooth curves with no sharp angles anywhere along it. Any trace with a kink in it is scrap, not a trace to straighten.
Crimping, coated wire, and when the twist is the wrong termination
The haywire twist terminates SINGLE-STRAND wire. That is a narrower statement than it sounds, because most of what is sold as wire trace material is not single-strand, and using the wrong termination for the material in your hand is how traces fail.
SINGLE-STRAND. One solid wire. Stiff, thin for its strength, cuts through teeth well, and takes a permanent kink the moment it is bent tight. This is the material the haywire twist is for, and it is the material this record's steps describe.
MULTI-STRAND, UNCOATED. Several fine wires laid or braided together. Far more supple and much more forgiving of bends, and it cannot be haywire twisted — the strands do not turn about a common axis the way one solid wire does, and a twist in it simply pulls apart. It is CRIMPED: a soft metal sleeve is squeezed onto the doubled wire with a proper crimping tool, not with pliers, which flatten rather than form and cut the strands.
NYLON-COATED WIRE. Multi-strand with a plastic jacket. Supple, quiet, and the coated versions can genuinely be knotted — a uni knot in coated wire is normal practice, which is exactly the kind of exception that makes the blanket rule 'wire cannot be knotted' misleading. Some are also crimped. The packaging is the authority here and there is no general answer.
TITANIUM AND SHAPE-MEMORY ALLOYS. Sold specifically because they do not kink, and terminated by knot or crimp depending on the product. They defeat the failure mode this record is mostly about, at a considerable price.
SO THE FIRST QUESTION IS NOT HOW TO TERMINATE IT. It is what material this is, and the answer comes off the spool label rather than from a technique. A crimp on single-strand is a weak joint; a haywire twist on multi-strand is not a joint at all.
AND THE WELFARE POINT SURVIVES ALL OF IT. Whichever material and whichever termination, the reason a wire trace is fitted where a fish can bite through nylon is that a fish which bites off swims away with hooks in it. A trace that fails is worse than no trace, because it fails after the fish is hooked.
