Wetting, seating and tag ends: the three things that decide whether a knot holds

Three habits, none of which appear in a knot diagram, and which between them account for most knot failures. The diagram shows the shape; these decide whether the shape survives contact with a fish.
A KNOT DIAGRAM SHOWS THE TOPOLOGY AND OMITS THE TECHNIQUE. Everything below is technique, and each one is a common failure.
WETTING. Pulling a knot tight drags line against line under high pressure, and friction generates heat. In monofilament and fluorocarbon that heat is enough to weaken the material at the precise point that will bear the load. Wetting — saliva or water, it makes no difference — lubricates the tightening and carries the heat away. This is the single most common tying fault and the easiest to fix. It matters most in fluorocarbon, which is hardest and generates the most friction, and least in braid, which does not deform in the same way.
SEATING. A knot that has been formed but not fully drawn down is not a knot; it is a shape that will finish tightening under load, and finishing under load means moving, and moving means abrasion at speed. A properly seated knot is pulled down firmly and steadily against the standing part until the coils close onto each other and stop moving. It should be pulled by the standing line and the hook or eye, not by the tag end — pulling the tag end tightens the wrong part.
And it should be seated once, deliberately. Repeatedly loosening and retightening a knot works the line and weakens it.
TAG ENDS. A tag trimmed flush is a tag with nothing to hold if the knot creeps a fraction under its first heavy load, and a knot that creeps past a flush tag comes apart entirely. Leaving one to two millimetres is the general convention, and slightly more in braid, which creeps more. The opposite error is real too: a long tag catches weed, tangles the hooklength around the main line, and on a lure interferes with the action.
WHAT TO DO WITH THE FINISHED KNOT. Look at it. The coils should be even, lying side by side rather than crossed over one another, and the knot should be symmetrical. A crossed coil is a stress point. This inspection takes two seconds and finds a surprising proportion of bad knots before they cost anything.
AND THEN TEST IT. A firm, steady pull against the rod's curve — not a jerk, and not against your bare hand if the line is braid — will reveal a knot that was going to fail. It is very much better to find that out on the bank.
Why cold hands change the answer
Everything above describes what a knot needs, and every one of those needs becomes harder in exactly the conditions where knots are most often tied.
COLD HANDS DO NOT FEEL A KNOT SEATING. The seating is a tactile event — the turns bedding down together, the knot drawing square — and hands that have been in winter water cannot detect it. The commonest consequence is a knot pulled tight rather than drawn up: the turns cross rather than bed, and the knot fails at a fraction of the line's strength with nothing visibly wrong.
WHICH MAKES THE VISUAL CHECK THE PRIMARY ONE IN COLD WEATHER, not the secondary one. Look at the knot. Compact, even, square against the eye. If you cannot see it, you cannot check it, which is an argument for a head torch rather than for tying by feel.
WETTING IS HARDER THAN IT SOUNDS IN THE DARK AND IN THE WIND. Saliva is the standard method and works; dipping the knot is better and requires putting it in water that may be some distance away. What matters is that the knot is wet BEFORE it is drawn, not after, because the damage from drawing a dry knot is done in the moment of tightening and cannot be undone by wetting it afterwards.
GLOVES CHANGE THE TRADE-OFF RATHER THAN SOLVING IT. Fingerless gloves keep the hands working and leave the fingertips exposed to the cold that is the problem; full gloves keep the fingers warm and remove the feel entirely. Most people who fish cold water seriously carry both and accept that some tasks need bare hands for thirty seconds.
AND THE TAG END IS THE ONE THING THAT GETS WORSE WITH CARE. Trimming flush is tidier and removes the small margin that lets a knot slip fractionally under shock without failing; leaving a millimetre or two is deliberate. In braid, which slips more, that margin matters more rather than less.
THE HABIT WORTH BUILDING. Retie the hook knot at the start of a cold session rather than trusting the one tied at the end of the last warm one. It costs a minute and removes the single most common failure in winter fishing.
