Line strength, diameter and knots

A stated breaking strain is a claim about a straight pull on undamaged line — which is not the situation any knot is ever in.
The number printed on a spool of line is the load at which that line parts under a steady straight pull. That is a genuine and useful figure, and it is not the strength of your tackle. Three things stand between the two.
A KNOT REDUCES IT. Every knot works by making the line grip itself, which means the line is bent sharply and compressed at the point of grip. That concentrates stress, and the line fails there rather than in the middle of a straight section. A well-tied knot in the right line retains most of the line's strength; a badly-tied or inappropriate one can retain far less. This is why knot choice and knot care matter more than a few pounds of stated breaking strain.
DAMAGE REDUCES IT, INVISIBLY. A nick from a gravel bed, an abrasion from a mussel bed, ultraviolet degradation over a season, and heat from a knot pulled up dry all reduce strength without changing how the line looks. This is why the standard advice to run the last few metres through your fingers before every session is worth following.
A SHOCK LOAD IS NOT A STEADY PULL. A sudden load — a heavy cast, a violent take, a strike into a snag — puts a peak on the line far higher than the average. Monofilament's stretch absorbs a great deal of that; braid's lack of stretch absorbs none, which is why a leader and a properly set drag matter far more with braid.
The honest summary is that the printed number is an upper bound achieved under laboratory conditions on undamaged line with no knot in it, and your tackle is never in that state.
Diameter is the more comparable number
Breaking strain is stated by the manufacturer and testing is not universally standardised outside formal line-class rules, so comparing two brands by their stated strain is unreliable. Diameter, in millimetres, is a physical measurement and is far more comparable — and it is also the figure that actually determines casting distance, visibility, water resistance and how much line fits on your spool.
Where a genuinely standardised measurement exists is in line-class rules used for record claims, where a class is defined by tested breaking strain and lines sold as class-rated are tested to break at or below the stated figure. That is a different thing from a general-purpose spool marked with a number, and the two should not be treated as equivalent.
If you want to know what your tackle will actually hold, the only reliable answer is to test the knot you tie, in the line you use, against a spring balance. It takes ten minutes and it is more informative than any amount of comparing packaging.
