The constraint that shapes every piece of sea tackle: salt water attacks metal continuously, and the failures it causes arrive without warning at load.

Line under tension — Can cause injury needing treatment
Corroded terminal tackle — hooks, split rings, swivels, wire — fails under load rather than at rest. A component parting while a fish is on returns tackle towards the angler at speed, and a seized drag transfers the full load to the rod, the line and whoever is holding them.
What reduces it: Rinse everything in fresh water after every session and dry it properly. Replace terminal tackle on a schedule rather than when it looks bad, since corrosion works from the inside of a bend and from under a coating. Do not store dissimilar metals in contact. Check drags run smoothly before fishing rather than during a run.
Every difference between freshwater and saltwater tackle traces back to one fact. Salt water is an electrolyte, and it corrodes metals continuously from the moment they enter it until the moment they are properly rinsed.
There are two mechanisms and they need different answers. ORDINARY CORROSION is oxidation accelerated by salt — rust on steel, pitting on aluminium — and it is slowed by choosing better materials and stopped by removing the salt. GALVANIC CORROSION is different and worse: when two dissimilar metals are in electrical contact in salt water, one of them corrodes preferentially and rapidly. That is why a stainless screw in an aluminium reel foot destroys the aluminium around it, why mixed-metal terminal tackle fails faster than either metal alone, and why manufacturers care so much about which alloys touch which.
What this means in practice is that saltwater tackle is built differently: sealed bearings and drags, anodised aluminium, graphite and composite bodies, coated or sacrificial components, and stainless or titanium wherever a component must be exposed.
And it means rinsing is maintenance rather than tidiness. A reel that is not rinsed after a session is being attacked continuously until it is, and the failure — a drag that seizes, a bail that jams, a hook that snaps at the bend — arrives under load, which is the worst possible moment and the reason this is a safety matter as well as an economic one.
How to actually rinse tackle, and what people get wrong
The commonest mistake is a hard jet of fresh water directly at a reel. Pressure drives salt water and grit PAST seals rather than removing it, and a reel rinsed that way is left with brine inside it — worse than not rinsing at all.
What works is unglamorous. A gentle flow of fresh water, or a fine spray, over the whole reel with the drag done up tight so water cannot pass into the drag stack. Then let it dry out of direct sun. Loosen the drag afterwards for storage, because a drag left compressed for months takes a set and becomes uneven — which is a slow failure nobody attributes to the right cause.
RODS need the guides and the reel seat rinsed as much as the blank. Salt crystallises in the reel seat threads and in the guide frames, and a guide's frame corroding at the foot is how a ring is lost mid-session.
TERMINAL TACKLE is where mixed metals cause the most trouble. Hooks, swivels, split rings and rigs left damp in a box together corrode each other, and the failure is a hook opening or a split ring parting under load. Dry terminal tackle properly, replace it on a schedule rather than on appearance, and do not store dissimilar metals in contact.
AND LINE is not exempt. Braid holds salt crystals between its fibres, which abrade it from inside, and monofilament degrades with ultraviolet light as well. Rinsing a spool and storing it out of sunlight is the whole of the maintenance.
The test for whether any of this matters is simple: everything above fails at load, which is when a fish is on and when a person is holding a rod under tension.

A reel that is grinding, stiff or seized after sea fishing
PROBLEM. The reel felt fine at the end of the session and is rough, gritty, stiff or completely locked the next time it comes out.
LIKELY CAUSES, in the order they actually occur. Salt crystals in the bearings and on the gear surfaces, formed as seawater dried. Corrosion on steel components — bearings, screws, shafts — that began the moment salt water reached them. Sand or grit in the roller, the bail mechanism or the drag. Grease washed out of a bearing by a dunking or by over-enthusiastic rinsing. And, on a reel that has had several seasons of this, genuine mechanical wear.
HOW TO DISTINGUISH THEM. Grittiness that is even through the whole handle turn is usually bearings. A rough spot at the same point every revolution is a gear or a bent shaft. Stiffness that eases after a few turns and returns after standing is salt crystallisation. Noise from the line roller alone with a smooth handle is the roller bearing, which is the commonest single failure. A drag that is jerky rather than smooth is salt or corrosion on the drag washers.
CHANGE ORDER. Rinse first, gently, with a light spray of fresh water and never a hose jet — pressure drives salt inward past seals rather than washing it out. Dry it, loosen the drag fully, and leave it somewhere ventilated. Then strip and service the line roller, which is a two-screw job on most reels and fixes a large share of complaints. Then lubricate: light oil on bearings, grease on gears, and much less of both than instinct suggests. Only then consider a full strip.
WHAT NOT TO ASSUME. That it is broken. Most reels described as ruined by salt are salted rather than damaged, and come back completely. And do not assume sealed means sealed — a sealed reel that has been submerged holds the water in.
WHEN THE ANSWER IS PREVENTION. Rinse and dry after EVERY sea session, not after the ones that felt wet. Slacken the drag before storage so the washers are not compressed. Do not stand a reel in sand. And accept that a reel used in surf will need servicing on a schedule rather than on symptoms.
