Before you spearfish — this comes first

  • Get proper instruction before you spearfish. A recognised freediving or spearfishing course teaches the things that actually kill people in this sport, and reading about them is not the same as being taught them.
  • Dive with a buddy, and dive one up, one down — one diver in the water, one on the surface watching them, every dive. A breath-hold blackout is silent and gives no warning; a watching buddy is the difference between an incident and a fatality.
  • Stay inside your own training and experience. Depth and breath-hold times are personal, they change day to day, and nobody else's numbers apply to you.
  • Understand the conditions before you enter the water: visibility, current, swell, tide, boat traffic and your exit. Conditions decide whether a dive is reasonable far more often than skill does.
  • Use equipment you have been shown how to use, check it before every session, and be visible — a marked float and line are how boat traffic knows you are there.
  • Never extend a dive for a fish. No catch is worth pushing a breath-hold, and the urge to take one more second is exactly what a blackout feels like from the inside — which is to say, like nothing at all.

A pneumatic gun is a pressure vessel. Dismantling it under pressure, transporting it loaded, or servicing it without releasing pressure can injure the person handling it.

What reduces it: Releasing pressure before any servicing, following the manufacturer's procedure rather than improvising, not storing fully pressurised, and never transporting the gun loaded.

A pneumatic gun stores energy in compressed air inside a sealed barrel. The shaft is pushed into the barrel against that pressure on loading, held by a trigger mechanism, and driven out by the air when released.

WHAT IT BUYS. Power for length. A short pneumatic can deliver energy that would need a much longer band gun, which matters in confined water, in poor visibility where shots are close, and for divers who want a manoeuvrable gun without giving up penetration.

WHAT IT COSTS. Three things.

NOISE. The discharge is louder than a band gun's, and in clear water with wary fish that is a real disadvantage rather than a theoretical one.

SERVICING. A pneumatic is a sealed pressure system with seals, an inner barrel and a valve. It needs periodic servicing, it can lose pressure, and it cannot be repaired at the waterside the way a snapped band can be replaced in two minutes.

LOADING FORCE. Loading pushes the shaft against full internal pressure, usually with a loading handle, and it is hard work — increasingly so as power rises.

RECOIL is also different in character: sharper, and on some designs partly absorbed by the mechanism, which is why some divers find them more accurate and others less.

Where each one dominates, and why it is regional

The split is partly technical and substantially cultural.

Pneumatics have a strong following in parts of the Mediterranean and in eastern Europe, where short powerful guns suit the water and the servicing culture exists. Band guns dominate in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and most of the English-speaking world, and the roller variants that have developed there are refinements of the band principle rather than of the pneumatic one.

The technical case for bands in open water is that they are quieter, simpler, field-repairable and scale to the long guns blue-water diving needs. The technical case for pneumatics in close quarters is power in a short package.

A reader encountering strong opinions on this should know that a good deal of the disagreement is about which water the arguer dives in, and that both systems have taken large fish for sixty years.

Pressure as a hazard, and as a maintenance obligation

A pneumatic is a pressure vessel and should be treated as one.

It should not be stored fully pressurised for long periods, should not be dismantled without understanding the mechanism, and should not be transported loaded. Pressure is released before any servicing, and the manufacturer's procedure is followed rather than improvised — this is one of the few places in spearfishing where the equipment can injure somebody who is not diving.

Salt water reaching the internal mechanism is the commonest cause of failure, and it usually announces itself as pressure loss or as a gun that has become hard to load. Both mean a service rather than more force.

Air travel adds a further consideration: pressurised equipment and speargun components are subject to carriage rules that differ by carrier and by country, and that is a matter for the airline and the relevant authority rather than for this page.
