Choosing line and leader for the sea

Two constraints dominate and neither exists in most freshwater fishing: abrasion against rock, shingle and shell, and shock loading from casting heavy leads and from surf. Everything else is secondary.

SEA TACKLE IS CHOSEN AGAINST DIFFERENT FAILURE MODES, and starting from freshwater habits produces line that fails for reasons a freshwater angler has never met.

CONSTRAINT ONE: ABRASION. The last few metres of line spend the session dragging over shingle, barnacle-covered rock, mussel beds and shell grit. That is a cutting environment, and it degrades line continuously rather than at a single moment. It is why the final section is a sacrificial leader on almost every sea rig, and why checking those metres by running them through your fingers between casts is not fussiness.

CONSTRAINT TWO: SHOCK. Casting a heavy lead, and a wave lifting and dropping a rig in surf, both apply loads far above the static weight involved. This is what the shock leader is for, and it is treated separately because it is a safety requirement rather than a performance choice.

HOW THE MATERIALS ACTUALLY BEHAVE HERE.

MONOFILAMENT remains the default main line for shore fishing and the reasons are good ones: it stretches, which absorbs surf loading and cushions a hook hold in moving water; it is cheap enough to replace on a schedule, which matters when the environment degrades it; it handles well on the multipliers and big fixed-spools used at sea; and it is forgiving of the simple knots people tie with cold wet hands.

BRAID buys casting distance for a given strength because it is far thinner, and it buys bite detection at range because it does not stretch — over a hundred metres of monofilament, a delicate bite disappears into the line's own elasticity. What it costs is real: no shock absorbency at all, poor abrasion resistance against rock, a tendency to cut hands, high visibility, and a habit of picking up weed because of its surface area. Braid is the better choice for distance ledgering over clean ground and frequently the worse choice over rough.

FLUOROCARBON is used at sea as a leader material rather than a main line, and for its abrasion resistance and density rather than for its visibility.

WIRE, where the quarry has teeth that shear nylon. A fish that swims off with a lure or bait and a severed trace has been condemned, so this is a welfare decision as much as a tackle one.

AND THE HOOKLENGTH IS CHOSEN LAST AND DELIBERATELY LIGHTER. It should be the weakest part of the rig, so that a snagged hook parts at the hook rather than losing the whole rig, and so that a break-off leaves the fish carrying as little as possible.

What the sea does to a leader, and why it gets shorter

Freshwater leader logic optimises for invisibility and delicacy. Saltwater leader logic optimises for turnover and abrasion, and the result looks quite different.

SHORTER AND STEEPER. A twelve-foot tapered leader that lays a size 18 dry fly on a chalk stream will not turn over a weighted baitfish pattern into a headwind. Coastal leaders are frequently six to nine feet, with a steeper taper and a heavier butt, because the job is transferring energy from a heavy line to a wind-resistant fly rather than presenting something invisibly.

AND THE WATER HELPS. Coastal water is generally more coloured and more broken than a spring creek, and the fish are moving rather than inspecting. Leader shyness matters far less than most freshwater anglers expect, which is why the trade goes the way it does.

ABRASION IS THE REAL ENEMY. Barnacle, mussel, oyster, kelp stipe and rock all part line that no tooth has touched, and a fish that runs into structure does exactly that. A heavier tippet than the fish's size suggests is normal practice on rough ground, and a short bite section of heavier material is conventional where the quarry has teeth — bass do not, mackerel do a little, barracuda and bluefish emphatically do.

FLUOROCARBON OR NYLON. Fluorocarbon is denser, so it sinks and helps hold a fly down, and it is more abrasion-resistant. Nylon floats better, is more forgiving of knots and is cheaper. On a coast the density argument is usually the deciding one, and the invisibility argument is worth less than it is in fresh water.

AND THE KNOT IS PART OF THE LEADER. Every connection is a potential failure point in a system that will be loaded harder than a trout leader, in water that has been corroding it. Tie fewer, better connections; check them; and re-tie after a fish rather than after a failure.

WHAT FISHINGHQ WILL NOT PUBLISH is a breaking-strain table matched to species. Line ratings are manufacturer claims measured differently between brands, knot strength varies with the knot and how it was seated, and the useful advice is structural rather than numerical: heavy enough to turn a fish before it reaches the ground it is heading for.
