How sea tackle differs from freshwater tackle

Salt water is corrosive, abrasive, deeper, faster-moving and holds larger fish, and every real difference in sea tackle is a response to one of those five things rather than to tradition.
Sea tackle looks different from freshwater tackle, and the differences are functional rather than cultural. Five properties of the environment account for nearly all of them.
CORROSION. Salt water attacks metal continuously, and it does so inside components as well as outside. Sea reels use sealed bearings, anodised or coated bodies, and corrosion-resistant hardware; sea hooks are heavier and often coated; and rod fittings are chosen for what salt does to them over seasons.
ABRASION. Sand in suspension, barnacles, mussels and rock are everywhere fish are, so heavier rubbing leaders, tougher line and heavier-wire hooks are standard and are treated as consumable.
DEPTH AND CURRENT. Holding bottom in a running tide at depth requires leads measured in ounces or hundreds of grams rather than grams, and rods and reels able to lift them repeatedly.
SIZE AND POWER. Many sea species are larger, faster and better able to run than most freshwater fish, so line capacity, drag quality and rod power all scale accordingly.
DISTANCE. Shore fishing frequently requires casting a heavy lead a long way, which produces the long, powerful beach rod and the shock leader that makes casting it safe.
What does NOT change is the underlying logic. Hooks are still chosen by gape and wire; rods still have an action and a power; drag is still a friction clutch. An angler who understands the freshwater versions understands the sea ones and is choosing different points on the same scales.
Care, which is the part that actually decides longevity
Salt does its damage between sessions rather than during them, and almost all of it is preventable.
Rinsing with a gentle spray rather than a jet is the standard instruction, and the reason is specific: a high-pressure jet forces salt water past seals and into bearings and drag stacks, which is the opposite of the intended effect.
Drying before storage matters as much as rinsing, because salt left in a damp component crystallises and then abrades.
Backing off a drag for storage relieves compression on friction washers that would otherwise take a permanent set.
Rods need their rings and reel seats rinsed too — salt in a reel seat thread is how a reel becomes permanently attached to a rod, and salt on a ring's inner surface abrades line.
And line is a consumable in salt in a way it is not in fresh water. Salt crystals in a braid's weave act as an abrasive against rod rings for the whole of its remaining life.

Where the differences are largest and where they vanish
The gap between fresh and salt tackle is at its widest in heavy shore and deep boat fishing, where nothing from a freshwater bag would survive a session.
It narrows sharply in light inshore lure fishing. A rod and reel used for perch in a European canal and for small bass or bream on an inshore mark differ in materials and hardware and are otherwise the same tool, which is why light saltwater lure fishing has grown so fast among freshwater anglers.
It effectively vanishes in fly fishing, where a saltwater outfit is a heavier, more corrosion-resistant version of a freshwater one and the casting is identical.
And it reverses in one respect: freshwater carp and catfish tackle is in some cases heavier and more specialised than the sea tackle used for fish of comparable size, because the fishing is more static and the terminal presentation more refined.
The useful conclusion for somebody crossing over is that the transferable knowledge is nearly all of it, and the non-transferable part is mostly about what salt does to metal.
