Line under tension — Can cause injury needing treatment
Braid is thin, hard and does not stretch, and it cuts skin like a wire under load. Pulling for a break by wrapping braid around a hand causes deep lacerations and, in heavier ratings, worse.
What reduces it: Never wrap braid around a bare hand. To pull for a break, wrap it around a solid object — the reel spool, a landing net handle, a gloved hand at minimum — and pull steadily with the rod pointed straight down the line.
Braid is made by braiding multiple strands of gel-spun polyethylene fibre into a single line. It has two properties that follow directly from that construction and that define everything about how it fishes.
It has essentially no stretch — under about three per cent, against nylon's twenty-plus. That means everything that happens at the terminal tackle is transmitted straight to the hand, which is transformative for lure fishing, and it means that every shock load goes straight to the hook-hold and the knot, with nothing absorbing it.
And it is far stronger for its diameter, so a thirty-pound braid is roughly the diameter of a twelve-pound nylon. That gives longer casting, less water and wind drag, and much better contact at depth.
The costs are real: braid is highly visible, so a leader is essentially compulsory; it cuts into itself on the spool under load; it damages rod rings over time; and it will cut a hand badly. Knots that hold perfectly in nylon slip in it, which is the source of most braid failures.

What it does
Provides a near-inextensible connection between rod and terminal tackle, so that lure action, bottom contact and takes are transmitted directly to the hand, and so that a strike moves the hook rather than stretching the line. Its high strength-to-diameter ratio also reduces water resistance and wind drag, which matters enormously when fishing deep or at range.
How to choose one
- Use braid where sensitivity or direct contact matters — lure fishing, jigging, deep water — and monofilament where shock absorption matters.
- Always use a leader: braid is opaque, highly visible, and has very poor abrasion resistance against rock and teeth.
- Choose by diameter as well as breaking strain; the strength-to-diameter ratio is where braid earns its cost.
- Higher strand counts are smoother and quieter through the rings; four-carrier braids are rougher and cheaper.
- Back the spool with monofilament so the braid cannot slip on the spool under load.
What the numbers mean
BREAKING STRAIN and DIAMETER are stated as for nylon, but the relationship is entirely different: a braid of a given diameter will be two to three times stronger than nylon of the same diameter. CARRIERS or STRANDS — 4, 8, 12 — describe how many fibres are braided together; more carriers give a rounder, smoother, quieter line at higher cost. PE RATING is a Japanese diameter standard used widely in lure fishing, where PE 1.0 is roughly 0.16–0.18 mm; it describes diameter, not strength, and two lines of the same PE rating can differ substantially in breaking strain.
Care, and how it fails
Braid does not degrade in ultraviolet light the way nylon does and lasts far longer, but it wears mechanically. It abrades against rock, teeth and rod rings, and a frayed, fuzzy section has lost most of its strength. The characteristic failure is a knot slipping: braid is slick and hard, and a clinch knot that holds in nylon will pull straight through. Use knots specified for braid, wet them, and seat them properly. Braid under load will also bed down into itself on the spool and lock up on the next cast, which is why a firm, even lay matters.

- Albright knotThe modern braid-to-leader join. Braid is slick and limp and a leader is stiff and hard, and a coil gripping along its whole length holds a pairing that a knot pinching at one point does not. Braid takes fifteen turns or more where monofilament takes ten, for the same reason it needs more turns everywhere.
- Arbor knotThe pairing where the knot is not the problem. Braid on a bare polished spool rotates however well it is tied, because it has almost no friction against smooth metal — the answers are tape, a monofilament underlay or a knurled arbor, and tightening the knot is not among them.
- Palomar knotBraid is slippery and many mono knots slip in it, which is the practical reason braid users converge on the palomar.
