Birds' nests and braid wind knots

Two different tangles with two different causes — one is the spool outrunning the line on a multiplier, the other is slack braid twisting on itself on a fixed spool — and neither is fixed by the other's remedy.
These get treated as one problem and share nothing except the result.
AN OVERRUN, OR BIRD'S NEST, HAPPENS ON A MULTIPLIER. The spool is spinning to feed line to a lead that is accelerating away. When the lead slows — at the top of the cast, in wind, or when it lands — the spool keeps spinning, and line comes off faster than it leaves. The result is a tangle inside the reel.
A WIND KNOT HAPPENS ON A FIXED SPOOL WITH BRAID. Braid is limp and has no memory, so when it goes slack it forms loose loops. A loop that goes out through the rings with the next cast pulls into a knot — which is why the knot appears in mid-air with nothing having touched it.
SO THE CAUSES ARE OPPOSITE. An overrun is too much energy in the spool. A wind knot is too little tension in the line.
WHAT MAKES EACH WORSE. Overruns: too little braking, a headwind, a punched cast, a lead that stalls, a spool filled too high. Wind knots: slack line after a cast, closing the bail by hand incorrectly, a lure or lead that spins, retrieving under no load, and braid too light for the rod.
What to change, by which tangle it is
IF IT IS AN OVERRUN. Add braking — magnetic or centrifugal — until the cast is controlled, then reduce gradually as technique improves. Educate the thumb: a light thumb on the spool through the cast is what experienced multiplier users are actually doing. Smooth the cast rather than punching it. Do not overfill the spool. And cast into wind with more brake, not less.
IF IT IS A WIND KNOT. Keep tension on the line at all times — the moment braid goes slack is the moment the loop forms. Close the bail with the handle rather than by hand, so the line seats under tension. Wind down under load rather than reeling into slack. Check the first few metres after every cast, because a forming loop is visible before it becomes a knot. And do not use braid lighter than the rod and the cast require.
WHAT NOT TO ASSUME. That braking is for beginners; everybody who casts a multiplier uses it and adjusts it to conditions. That a wind knot is caused by wind; it is caused by slack, and wind only makes slack more likely. Or that either can be safely fished through — both halve breaking strain and both are the usual precursor to a crack-off.
AND THE CONDITIONS POINT. In a strong headwind on a multiplier, or with light braid in a crosswind, the tangles may simply be telling you the conditions are wrong for that setup rather than that your technique has collapsed.
