Crack-offs, and why they happen

A lead leaving the rod at casting speed with nothing attached to it is the most dangerous thing that happens in shore fishing — and almost every cause is a preparation failure rather than bad luck.
Safety
Hooks and barbs — Can cause serious injury or death
A mainline or shock leader failing during a cast releases the lead and terminal tackle as an unguided projectile capable of travelling well beyond the intended range and causing serious or fatal injury to anybody in the arc.
What reduces it: Retying the leader knot each session and cutting back the worn metre of mainline, matching leader strength to lead weight, enough turns on the spool, a smooth accelerating cast rather than a punch, inspecting line after every tangle or snag, and checking the full arc — including behind and downwind — before every cast rather than only the first.
A crack-off is the mainline or leader failing during the cast, releasing the lead as an unguided projectile. On a public beach that is a serious matter, and it is why this record treats the subject as safety before tackle.
WHAT IS ACTUALLY HAPPENING. A cast applies an enormous, very brief load — far greater than the weight being thrown — to whatever is weakest in the system. The failure finds that weak point, and the weak point is usually something the angler could have seen.
THE CAUSES, IN ORDER.
DAMAGED LINE AT THE LEADER KNOT. Line abraded by sand, rock and repeated casting concentrates wear exactly where the load is highest. This is the commonest single cause.
TOO FEW TURNS ON THE SPOOL, so the leader knot is not backed by line lying under it and the knot itself passes the rings under full load.
A LEADER TOO LIGHT FOR THE LEAD. The conventional guide is a substantial multiple of the lead weight, and it exists precisely because of this failure.
A BADLY SEATED OR BADLY CHOSEN KNOT, particularly a bulky one that catches a ring.
WIND KNOTS AND TANGLES IN THE MAINLINE, which halve breaking strain invisibly.
A SNATCHED, PUNCHED CAST rather than a smooth acceleration, which spikes the peak load.
AND A LEAD SWINGING ON TOO LONG A DROP, which loads the system unpredictably.
How to tell them apart, and what to change
THE LINE BROKE AT THE LEADER KNOT. Almost always abrasion or a poorly seated knot. Retie every session, and cut back a metre of mainline before doing so — that metre has taken every cast.
THE LINE BROKE MID-LEADER. Abrasion along its length, usually from rock or from the reel seat. Inspect by running the leader through your fingers; you will feel damage you cannot see.
THE LINE BROKE WELL UP THE MAINLINE. A wind knot or existing damage. This is the one that most often reaches other people, because the whole leader and lead go.
IT HAPPENS ONLY ON BIG CASTS. Load-related: leader too light, or the cast too abrupt.
IT HAPPENS ON THE FIRST CAST AFTER A TANGLE. Almost certainly damage from the tangle, which is why a tangle should be followed by an inspection rather than a cast.
WHAT TO CHANGE, IN ORDER. Retie the leader knot and cut back mainline. Check the leader is heavy enough for the lead. Put enough turns on the spool. Smooth the cast. And inspect after every snag, tangle and fish.
WHAT NOT TO ASSUME. That a leader is fine because it looks fine — abrasion is felt rather than seen. That heavier line solves it — a heavier line badly tied fails in the same place. Or that it was a freak event; crack-offs almost always have a findable cause.

The part that is not about tackle
A LEAD LEAVING A ROD AT CASTING SPEED CAN KILL SOMEBODY. That is not a rhetorical warning: several ounces of metal travelling at the speed a beachcaster generates carries serious energy, and it lands well beyond where the angler was aiming.
SO THE NON-NEGOTIABLE PRACTICE. Know what is behind and beside you before every cast, not just the first. Beaches fill up. People walk dogs behind you. Somebody sets up thirty metres away while you are looking at the sea.
DO NOT CAST WITH PEOPLE IN THE ARC, and treat the whole downwind sector as the arc, because a crack-off does not follow the intended line.
CHECK BEFORE POWER CASTING IN THE DARK, when you cannot see who arrived.
AND STOP FISHING RATHER THAN CAST PAST SOMEBODY. Waiting is free.
THE MAINTENANCE POINT IS THE SAFETY POINT. Retying a leader takes two minutes and is the single most effective thing anybody can do to stop a lead going somewhere unintended. That is why this record puts it first rather than treating it as good housekeeping.
