Why rigs tangle, and the principles that stop it

A rig tangles in flight, not in the water — and almost every fix is about making the hook end travel behind the lead rather than beside it.
Anglers reliably picture tangles happening in the water. Almost all of them happen in the air, in the first second, and understanding that makes the fixes obvious.
WHAT HAPPENS ON A CAST. The lead accelerates hard and pulls the rig out behind it. The hooklengths, being much lighter, lag and then swing. If a hooklength swings past the mainline or past another hooklength, it wraps — and every subsequent metre of flight tightens the wrap. The rig lands tangled and fishes nothing for the next twenty minutes.
THE CAUSES, IN ORDER.
HOOKLENGTHS TOO LONG for the rig body, so they have room to swing past each other or past the main line.
NOTHING HOLDING THE BAIT IN LINE. An unclipped bait swings independently of everything else and is the commonest single cause on a beach rig.
TOO MANY HOOKS. Every additional hooklength adds something to tangle with, and three-hook rigs tangle more than one-hook rigs by a wide margin.
A JERKY CAST. A smooth pull keeps everything strung out behind the lead; a punch lets the rig catch up and overtake.
LIMP HOOKLENGTH MATERIAL, which collapses and folds rather than standing away from the body.
AND WIND ACROSS THE CAST, which pushes light components sideways in flight.
WHAT DOES NOT USUALLY CAUSE IT. Tide. Fish. The retrieve. A rig that came back tangled was almost always tangled on the way out.
The principles, and why clipped rigs exist
Four principles cover nearly all of it, and the tackle that has evolved for this problem is a direct expression of them.
KEEP THE HOOK END BEHIND THE LEAD. Everything follows from this. Bait clips hold the baited hook against the rig body during flight and release it on impact, which is why clipped rigs both tangle less and cast further — the second is a side effect people notice more than the first.
SHORTEN THE HOOKLENGTHS relative to the spacing between them. A hooklength that cannot reach the next attachment point cannot wrap it. This is arithmetic rather than judgement.
USE STIFFER MATERIAL. A hooklength with some stiffness stands away from the body instead of folding back along it.
REDUCE THE NUMBER OF HOOKS. One hook rarely tangles. Three tangle regularly. If a mark does not need three, one is not a compromise.
AND ONE THAT COSTS NOTHING: SMOOTH THE CAST. A long, steady, accelerating pull rather than a punch. It reduces tangles, reduces bait loss and increases distance at the same time, which is unusual.
WHAT NOT TO ASSUME. That a tangle-prone rig is badly tied; commercial rigs tangle too, and the geometry is what matters. That clips are only for distance; their first purpose is presentation control. And that a tangled rig can be fished — it cannot, and the ten seconds spent checking it on retrieve is the cheapest time in the session.
