Arbor knot

The knot that fastens line to the reel spool. For most fishing it is a fastening rather than a load-bearing connection — and the record is explicit about the fishing where that stops being true.
THIS IS THE ONE KNOT IN FISHING MOST ANGLERS NEVER TEST, AND FOR MOST FISHING THAT IS A DEFENSIBLE CHOICE.
On the overwhelming majority of tackle the spool holds far more line than any fish will take. The arbor knot's real job is to stop the whole spool of line rotating loosely on the arbor when the reel is filled and when line is retrieved under tension. It is a fastening, and it is the reason a reel can be loaded at all.
THE CONSTRUCTION IS A SLIP KNOT WITH A STOPPER BEHIND IT. The line goes round the arbor, an overhand knot is tied around the standing line so it can slide, and a second overhand knot is tied in the tag behind it. Pulling the standing line slides the first knot down to grip the arbor; the stopper knot jams against it and stops the tag pulling through. That is the whole mechanism, and the stopper is the part people leave out.
IT SLIPS BY DESIGN ON SOME SETUPS AND THAT IS A MATERIAL PROBLEM, NOT A KNOT PROBLEM. Braid on a bare polished aluminium spool will rotate however well the knot is tied, because braid has almost no friction against smooth metal. The answers are a strip of tape round the arbor, a few turns of monofilament backing beneath the braid, or a spool with a knurled or rubberised arbor. Tying the knot tighter does not solve it and never has.
THE SYMPTOM OF A SLIPPING ARBOR IS ROUTINELY MISDIAGNOSED. The handle turns and line does not come in, or a fish takes line the drag was not set to give. Anglers conclude the drag has failed and tighten it, which loads the slipping connection harder and makes the problem worse.
AND THERE IS FISHING WHERE IT IS A LOAD-BEARING CONNECTION AFTER ALL. A fish capable of emptying a spool — a large shark, a tuna, a strong fish in current on light tackle — reaches the arbor. At that point this knot is the last thing between the angler and the loss of the entire spool of line plus everything attached to the far end of it, including a hooked fish that then tows all of it. In that fishing the arbor knot is tied properly, inspected, and treated as part of the system rather than as packaging.

How to tie it

- Open the bail arm or free the spool, and pass the line right round the arbor — the bare centre barrel of the spool — bringing the tag back out alongside the standing line.
- Tie a simple overhand knot in the tag around the standing line, so that it can slide along it.
- Tie a second overhand knot in the tag on its own, 5 mm or so beyond the first. This is the stopper, and it is the step that is usually missed.
- Wet both knots.
- Pull the standing line so the first knot slides down and grips the arbor, and the stopper jams up behind it.
- Trim the tag close to the stopper, then begin winding under light finger tension so the first turns bed onto the arbor rather than onto each other.
Finishing it properly
- Tie the stopper knot. Without it the sliding knot has nothing to jam against and the connection is not finished.
- Put a strip of tape or a few turns of monofilament on a bare spool before loading braid, and treat that as part of the job rather than an optional extra.
- Wind the first turns under light finger tension so they bed onto the arbor.
- Fill to a couple of millimetres short of the spool lip rather than to it. Overfilling sheds loops, and it costs more fishing time than every other knot on the reel combined.
How it fails
The connection does not usually break; it ROTATES. The knot grips the line perfectly and the line grips the spool not at all, so the whole load of line turns on the arbor. This is near-universal with braid on a bare metal spool and is a material problem rather than a tying one — the fix is tape, a monofilament underlay or a knurled arbor, never a tighter knot. The second failure is the stopper being omitted, in which case the tag pulls back through the sliding knot and the whole spool comes free. Inspect by holding the spool still and pulling the line firmly: neither the line on the arbor nor the tag should move.
Loading a reel: the things that actually go wrong, and none of them is the knot
The arbor knot takes fifteen seconds and is almost never the reason a freshly loaded reel misbehaves. The rest of the operation is where the session-ruining faults come from, and they are all measurable.
FILL LEVEL, WHICH CAUSES MORE LOST FISHING TIME THAN EVERYTHING ELSE COMBINED. A fixed-spool reel filled right to the lip sheds loops off the spool on the cast, and those loops become the tangle at the rod tip. Filled two or three millimetres short of the lip it does not. That single measurement is the difference between a reel that casts and a reel that fights you, and it is the commonest fault on newly loaded tackle.
LINE TWIST PUT IN DURING LOADING. Line comes off a supply spool in a particular way, and loading it so the line rolls off the side of a stationary spool puts a twist in every single turn. The result is line that coils off the reel in springs. Let the supply spool rotate on a pencil or a spindle, and if the line still twists, flip the supply spool over — the direction matters and it is a one-second test.
TENSION DURING LOADING. Line wound on slack beds into itself under the first real cast, which is felt as a sudden lock-up mid-cast. Wind it on under light finger pressure throughout — enough to keep it firm, not enough to stretch it.
BRAID DIRECTLY ONTO A BARE SPOOL, which is the arbor problem proper: the whole load rotates because braid has no grip on smooth metal. Tape, a monofilament underlay, or a knurled arbor. This is the one item on the list the knot is even adjacent to, and tightening the knot does not touch it.
AND THE MISDIAGNOSIS TO WATCH FOR. A slipping arbor presents as the handle turning without retrieving line, or as a fish taking line the drag was not set to give. Both look exactly like a failed drag, and tightening the drag loads the slipping connection harder. If a reel starts giving line at a setting that used to hold, check the arbor before touching the drag knob.
